“But my cat is short-haired… surely they can’t get matted?”

They absolutely can — and it’s far more common than you might think.

The gorgeous cat in these photos is short-haired, but had developed significant matting. Mats can form when loose/dead coat isn’t being removed effectively and starts to compact together — and once established, they can become tight and uncomfortable against the skin.

Some cats are particularly prone to this as they get older, gain weight, become less mobile, or simply struggle to keep on top of their own grooming.

And importantly: matting doesn’t automatically mean a cat is neglected.
It can creep up surprisingly quickly, particularly in dense coats.

If matting has already formed, please don't try to cut it out with scissors at home. Cat skin is incredibly thin and can easily be pulled up into the mat.

Professional cat grooming isn't just for fluffy, long-haired cats. Regular grooming can remove dead coat, spot problem areas early and help keep your cat comfortable.

Beautiful old boy Yuki visited today for a much needed groom. He had a double wash with our natural, premium shampoo, followed by an intensive, deep repair conditioning mask and massage to soothe his skin, help repair his coat and add condition back in.
We opted for a more subtle, natural look, no polished lines, or scissor finish to retain his character.

I think we could make a jumper from the amount of coat that we removed!
