"No", isn't helping.

"No", can increase frustration, build tension, shut down communication and no one will win.

So, if "No" doesn't help, then what should you do when your pup does something undesirable?

Before you say or do anything, ponder the question, 'why?'. Why are they doing that here and now? What is the motivation and intended goal for this behaviour? Beyond basic getting your attention, there could be various layers beyond any behaviour.

There could be a medical issue that you can't see.
An emotional need that isn't being met.
A breed-specific behaviour that isn't being met.
A situation, context or stimuli that the pup isn't comfortable with.
Even previous trauma and poor breeding can affect a pup's behaviour.

It can be complicated to determine and confusing to decypher what your pup needs.

If your pup shows an undesirable behaviour which you can't figure out, let me know in the comments, I'd love to offer my insight!

And if your pup shows a new behaviour almost 'overnight', with no clear cause, always contact your vet for a check up. Sometimes our pups just aren't feeling 100% 🩵

The biggest and most underrated aspect of a walk for a dog is SNIFFING!

Allowing your dog to sniff allows them the opportunity to gain an incredible amount of information on the people, dogs, cats and wildlife that have passed through the area recently.

From you dog's perspective, the air is filled with multiple layers of scents; rising, falling and swirling in the air, containing all sorts of information!

The age, s*x, reproductive state and recent diet of another dog, the condition of a prey animal, the emotional state of a person who walked by, various local wildlife and even changes in the weather - all dogs can pick up on these invisible facts.

So when your pup discovers a good sniffy spot, give them that time to really investigate that scent and understand where it came from 🩵

Kobi and Arnie - two wonderfully gentle boys 🥰

Kobi and Arnie are highly food motivated and absolutely love sniffing out treats in grass, leaves - anywhere! If there's a treat on the floor, it won't be there for very long!

Though the boys still struggle a little when seeing other dogs, they have made incredible progress! Their family has worked hard to follow my suggestions and to help the boys stay calm and enjoy their walks, even if there's another dog in sight.

Before, when they saw another dog, they would both pull and bark. With their size, I imagine it looked quite intimidating!

But now, without missing a beat, they see another dog and look straight back to me for reassurance and guidance. We add some distance, have some cuddles and now they can see a dog without a single bark!

These boys are absolutely adorable; friendly, excitable, gentle and down right goofy!

Meet Titan, a Caucasian Shepherd Dog! 🥰🐕🩵

Titan really is a giant and he's still got plenty of growing to do. Though he may be big and intimidating for some, he's incredibly soft and gentle 🩵

Titan loves his walks, sniffing out treats in the grass and having a good run around!

I love getting him out for walks and letting him explore, getting up to date on the recent comings and goings of other dogs, people and animals. He especially loves bird watching if one flys close by! 😊🩵

Control = Autonomy = Calmness

To help your pup have a sense of control whenever they feel overwhelmed, allow them to decide what they'd like to do.

Some dogs already know how to help decompress; some know how to walk away, disengage and let go of their physical tension.

However, not all dogs know this skill! Much like people, some dogs need a little help to recognise when their emotions are building up and how to cope with them in a healthy way.

So the next time your pup begins to get overwhelmed, offer them alternatives!

Time in the garden? Time to chew on their favourite toy or long lasting treat? Sniff out treats hidden around the area? Or simply a chance to sit at a distance, assess the situation and take a deep breath.

Much like humans, our pup's emotions can sometimes be too much to handle. It's our responsibility to help them recogonise their stress levels and choose a healthy option to self-regulate and return to a calm and happy state of mind.

If your pup needs support with their emotions, being overwhelmed or struggling to cope with anxiety or stress - I am here to help! 🩵

Your pup can pull on lead and 'ignore' you for many various reasons;
- An interesting scent
- Another dog/person/animal
- They want to run and/or play, rather than be calm.
- They want to socialise with other dogs.
- Or they are struggling with an emotional issue; anxiety, stress or overstimulation.

This post is more about the small things you can try to help motivate your pup to staying focused on you. These suggestions should also be used as payment for their hard work - staying calm, focusing on you and ignoring that distraction. If you went to work and didn't get paid, would you go back for your next shift?

If you think your pup needs extra support when out on walks, I am here to help! With over 6 years of experience and continous studying, I can help to put you and your pup on the path to success! Happy and fun walks that you can both enjoy!
