This weather really hits our industry hard.

Over the last few days, many of us in the dog industry have had to make the decision to cancel classes, workshops, walks, training sessions, daycare activities and events.

As small businesses, every cancellation has an impact. We lose income, spend hours rearranging schedules, and often absorb costs that can’t be recovered.

But dog welfare will always come first.

No class, walk, workshop or training session is worth putting a dog at risk. When temperatures soar, our responsibility is to keep dogs safe, even when it’s the harder business decision.

So today, I’d love to shine a light on the amazing small businesses who are also putting welfare first. If you know a dog trainer, walker, daycare, groomer, physio, hydrotherapist, pet sitter or any other pet professional who has been affected by the heat, tag them below and give them a follow.

Supporting small businesses costs nothing, but it can make a huge difference.

Let’s show some love to the people who spend every day caring for our dogs. ❀️🐾

Force free handling of animals needing medication can be difficult, particularly the "prey species" we keep so often as pets (rabbits, guinea pigs, rodents etc) but building trust and handling them in as gentle a way as possible is important for their well being. As you can see here, this bunny happily accepted the meds from the syringe without restraint or handling of any kind because I built trust with him.

β˜€οΈπŸΎ HOT WEATHER WARNING FOR DOG OWNERS πŸΎβ˜€οΈ
The UK sunshine might feel amazing to us… but for our dogs, temperatures over 26Β°C can become dangerous very quickly. 🌑️
We worry especially about sighthounds (greyhounds, whipets, lurchers etc), older dogs, flat-faced breeds, who refuse to admit they’re overheating. πŸ˜…πŸΆ
πŸ”₯ Hot pavements can burn paws in seconds
πŸ”₯ Dogs can’t cool themselves like humans do
πŸ”₯ Heatstroke can become life-threatening FAST

🐾 TOP TIPS FOR SAFE SUMMER WALKS 🐾
β˜€οΈ Walk early morning or later evening
β˜€οΈ Shorter walks are absolutely fine
β˜€οΈ Stick to shaded areas and grass where possible
β˜€οΈ Always carry fresh water
β˜€οΈ Avoid intense exercise, ball throwing, and long hikes
β˜€οΈ If the pavement is too hot for the back of your hand for 5 seconds β€” it’s too hot for paws
⚠️ Signs of overheating: β€’ Excessive panting
β€’ Slowing down or refusing to walk
β€’ Drooling
β€’ Bright red gums
β€’ Vomiting or wobbling
If your dog shows signs of heatstroke: ➑️ Move them somewhere cool immediately
➑️ Offer cool (not ice cold) water
➑️ Wet paws, belly, and chest with cool water
➑️ Contact your vet ASAP
Remember β€” skipping one walk will NOT harm your dog. Heatstroke can. ❀️
Let’s keep tails wagging safely this summer β˜€οΈπŸ•

As a mobile vet nurse, staff training is something I take seriously.
So when I went looking for a canine first aid course good enough to put my team through β€” I couldn't find one I was happy with.
Too basic. Too generic. Not built by anyone who'd actually worked clinically with animals.
So I built one myself. 🐾
Fur-st Aid is a brand new canine first aid course created from 25+ years of real veterinary nursing experience. Practical, clear and genuinely useful β€” covering everything from choking and CPR to toxic plants, seizures and heatstroke.
It's the course I needed for my own team. But honestly? Every dog owner, walker, groomer and carer deserves access to this.
Bookings opening soon.
