Day out at Little Downham Horse Trials 🤩

Today was monumental for one of my lovely clients and her horse, Ziggy. I have been working with them for a few years now, rehabbing him from a weak and very painful back. We’ve had a few obstacles along the way, such as laminitis and EMS diagnosis, abscesses and hideous weather! But, today was a massive milestone in both Ziggy’s and Sarah’s journey. Typically I left my phone at home 🤦🏻‍♀️ so was not able to capture the event, but all I can is wow! I am so proud of you Sarah! Not only for your perseverance but also for being so brave and trusting me that it would be ok to have a trot. The first picture shows Ziggy’s back a few years ago. Suffering from a weak thoracic sling and lordosis caused by an ill fitting saddle. The second photo is today, after being ridden by sarah. What a difference! He was perfect, which is the complete opposite of how he was under saddle a few years ago. 🙌🏻👌🏻🤩 I love this horse, he will always be one of my faves to work with 🥰 I must mention the fabulous Poppy Webber for her expertise in saddle fitting and continued support 😊 Sarah Jones

Head and Neck Position - What's the Big Deal?

It really is beyond the time to have an honest discussion about welfare and biomechanically appropriate training.

Too often, the horse world obsesses over head and neck position, chasing a “perfect frame” at the expense of the horse’s physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing.

Gadgets, force, and coercive methods to create a “look” can lead to long-term physical damage, stress, and emotional shutdown for our horses.

True self-carriage doesn’t come from the head and neck—it’s a whole-horse, whole-rider process.

The head and neck are balancers, reflecting the horse’s overall alignment and engagement. Imbalance in the body shows up there, and forcing a frame only masks the real issue, leaving horses vulnerable to injury and burnout.

Let’s learn to do better. Let's look to the evidence and research to follow better protocols, ones that prioritize horse welfare as an essential element of skilled riding.
