Ellie started with us a few years ago as a kennel assistant, and we've loved watching her grow into the passionate, confident, and incredibly skilled young woman she is today. She's a huge part of our team, and we're so proud of everything she's accomplished.

Found a fledgling bird? Don't panic, help is at hand! 🐦

It's that time of year when we start seeing young birds out of the nest. Often, these are fledglings, and they're supposed to be on the ground!

Here's a quick guide on what to do (and what NOT to do!):

Is it truly in danger? Fledglings have most of their feathers, are hopping around, and might even try to fly short distances. Their parents are usually nearby, watching and feeding them. Unless it's in immediate danger (e.g., in the middle of a busy road, being stalked by a cat), the best thing to do is leave it alone.

Keep pets away! This is crucial. If you have cats or dogs, keep them indoors or on a leash when near the fledgling to prevent injury.

If it's a nestling (no feathers/very few feathers): If you find a baby bird with little to no feathers, it's a nestling and needs help. If you can safely locate the nest, try to return it. If not, contact a local wildlife rescue or veterinary clinic immediately.

If you must move it for safety: If the fledgling is in immediate danger (e.g., on a road), you can gently move it a very short distance to a safer, nearby spot (like under a bush) where its parents can still find it.

Still concerned? If you're unsure, or if the bird appears injured, lethargic, or truly abandoned (after observing for a few hours from a distance), contact your local wildlife rescue or vets for advice. Please do NOT attempt to feed it or give it water unless advised by a professional.

Let's give our feathered friends the best chance to thrive! ❤️

☀☀HEATSROKE PREVENTION☀☀

As the temperatures rise again, it's time to prioritise pet safety! We've listed below some of crucial signs of heatstroke you need to know.

Signs of Heatstroke:

Excessive Panting or Heavy Breathing: This is often the first and most obvious sign, especially in dogs. They'll be panting much harder and faster than normal, even at rest. Cats may also pant, which is unusual for them and a strong indicator of heat stress.

Excessive Drooling: Saliva may be thick, sticky, or stringy.

Lethargy or Weakness: Appears tired, sluggish, unwilling to move or play, even when normally energetic.

Staggering, Wobbly, or Loss of Coordination: Appears disoriented or drunken, bumping into things.

Vomiting or Diarrhoea: This can sometimes be bloody in severe cases.

Confusion or Disorientation: Unresponsive to commands, blank stare.

Collapse: Unable to stand or get up.

If you suspect your animal is suffering from heatstroke, please contact you vet IMMEDIATELY.

Just like the student nurses pets above (Pumpkin😾, Mittens😾 and Roxy🐶), they will love the warmer temperature at times but it is important to provide the following:

Fresh Water: Mulitple options and clean bowls are best

Shaded areas: Your pets may enjoy being outside in the hot weather so make sure there is a shady spot for them either under a tree or you could put an umbrella out, we advise keeping animals inside where possible, especially at peak times (11am-4pm)

Regular Grooming: Even a simple thing like brushing can take away excess fur and help keep your pet cool during the warmer period.

As always, if you have any questions please do get in touch!

On VE Day, it's important to remember the contributions of animals in World War II. Many dogs, pigeons, horses, and other animals were involved in the war effort, often performing crucial tasks and demonstrating remarkable bravery. Some notable examples include dogs like Brian, who was a paradog, and pigeons like GI Joe, who delivered messages and even saved lives

Dogs:
Dogs were used for a variety of purposes, including search and rescue, detecting mines, guarding property, and even parachuting behind enemy lines. Rip was one of the earliest dogs to be recognized for their search and rescue work, and Brian, a two-year-old Collie cross, was a famous paradog.
Pigeons:
Carrier pigeons were crucial for delivering messages, especially when other forms of communication were disrupted. GI Joe is a notable example, earning the PDSA Dickin Medal for his bravery.
Horses:
Horses were used for transportation, pulling artillery, and even participating in cavalry charges.
Other animals:
Other animals, like cats, were also involved in the war effort, with some even being awarded the PDSA Dickin Medal for their bravery.

Many of these animals were awarded the PDSA Dickin Medal, the "Victoria Cross" for animals, for their bravery and service during the war. On VE Day, it's important to remember and celebrate the contributions of these unsung animal heroes.
