We love working with people and dogs www.thefamilydogclub.co.uk

A family run business, Gavin and Jeanette, we are both fully qualified dog trainers, and Jeanette a behaviourist, we only use kind, reward based methods to train dogs. Helping you to enjoy your dogs is what our job is all about. We work with both owners and dogs to resolve and understand any behavioural issues they may have, to help

them feel more confident and secure and to give owners the confidence they need to train their dogs. Training dogs isn’t all about obedience, its about having a strong relationship with your dog whereby they want to work with you. We are all about having fun, and want owners to enjoy the experience as much as the dogs too. We work with a wide range of dogs and issues owners are having. We also train a lot of dogs for fun, to give them enriched lives, and in turn their owners. Behaviour Consultations are required when we need to change the behaviour of the dog and when we need to work in conjunction with a vet to look at various options of diet changes, herbal medicines, or in some cases pharmacology, to help improve the dogs life. We put some management practices in place along with a training plan, we will also look to have regular catch ups to discuss their progress, as well as on-going support.

1-2-1 Consultations -

For Training, Reactive Dogs and dogs that are aroused by the environment we offer 1-2-1 consultations here in our field, we discuss with you what could be going on and look to help you understand your dog in terms of body language, threshold, environments etc. We then work through with you what you are able to do to help your dog and reduce the behaviour or help to build their confidence. We also offer 1/2 hour social sessions with selected dogs to help your dogs to learn how to play confidently and politely with other dogs. We run a number of classes through-out the week, with 3 classes on a Saturday, regular Sunday classes, Monday and Wednesday night classes. Great first day at The New Forest Show, we have a great set up with fans, cooling mats etc. We have plenty of water to keep them cool too. Met lots of lovely people and dogs yesterday! It’s a lot quieter today because of the heat and we will make adjustments accordingly.

Often people don't train their dog as they feel overwhelmed at the thought of doing so.

Rather than think you have to have lots of time and a plan start with a few mins a day. Flick the kettle on, grab some treats and have fun with your dog.

The first year of your puppies life is so important, the more you put in, the more you reap the benefits at a later date.

Training your puppy:

Helps them to navigate the world
Sets them up for success
Helps you, the owner to be able to live day to day with your dog
Helps you to create a world and life which includes your dog
Prevents unwanted behaviours later in life

For some, we can think an easy puppy means we don't need to train them, however its a lot harder to revisit and start your foundations once they hit adolescence, I highly recommend working with a professional for at least the first year of your dogs life.

New Puppy Owners -

Having a new puppy can be really hard, it can feel like your whole world has been turned upside down.

We can very quickly get into a negative mindset:

All he does is bite
All she does is attack us
They won't stop jumping up
I can't leave them
They won't listen to me etc

By changing our outlook, we can very quickly change our mindset, and therefore our experience as a dog owner.

If you find yourself saying these things, grab a pen and write down:

How does your puppy make you laugh?
What do they do that is silly?
When have they been amazing (even if its short periods of time)
What do you love about their character?

What are you learning about yourself now you have your puppy? (this can be a big one, for me it was I need to work on my patience, and get up earlier if I have more things to do, for some it might be learning to let go of a little bit of control, or not worry about mess)

Having a puppy is a huge learning curve, you almost have to have lots of knowledge and skills you didn't before. You have to get to know and understand your puppy. Learn about breeds, learn that there are many myths in the dog world that aren't true (think dominance) and then learn about ourselves.

Its not just get a puppy, do a 8 week course and off you go, there is much more too it.

If you're feeling overwhelmed just know its normal and it happens to nearly all new puppy owners.
