Bird flu latest:
Unfortunately the dreaded Bird flu is currently doing it’s rounds with about 25 cases being
reported in commercial/domestic flocks since October 2024 this is about one third of the cases
reported during October 2021 and January 2022 when record number of cases were reported.
Restrictions have been imposed to all poultry keepers in the United Kingdom ‘The Avian Influenza
Prevention Zone” these restrictions apply to all poultry keepers:
1) Reduce the risk of wild birds mixing with domestic poultry
2) Ensure that ducks and geese are kept separate other domestic birds
3)Feed and water containers should be kept away from wild birds
4) All poultry should not have access to waterways shared by wild birds
5) Disinfectant mats or foot baths should be used when accessing and exiting your poultry areas
6) Keep a regular watch on DEFRA announcements, please note that these will not always be
broadcast on media platforms, so please ensure that you have registered your poultry, as you
will then be notified Of the latest developments.
Certain areas of Yorkshire and Eastern Counties have enforced housing restrictions please check
with DEFRA for mote information.
Vaccinations are currently available to establishments which hold a Zoo licence, there is an ongoing discussion regarding the use of vaccines which will continue for a long time.
Approved disinfectants, there are a large number of disinfectants on the market however some
are not approved by DEFRA to prevent the spread of Avian Influenza so it would be advisable to check with your supplier before purchasing.
Please dispose of any ‘used disinfectant”
responsibly, ideally through a bed of sand or similar to prevent it reaching watercourses.
Please note that these notes are for guidance only, I hope it helps.
