Flystrike, also known as myiasis, is a serious condition that can affect many species but is especially common in rabbits. It occurs when flies lay eggs on rabbits' bodies, and the eggs then hatch into maggots that feed on your rabbit's skin. This condition is prevalent during the summer months, can develop very quickly, and, more often than not, proves fatal😥
Flies are attracted to the smells of faeces, urine and blood and therefore lay their eggs on dirty, damp or injured animals.
Here are some preventative measures you can take to ensure your rabbit is protected against flystrike:
🐇Groom them regularly and keep their rear-end clean and hair-free.
🐇Clean their living area regularly.
🐇Flies hanging around? Check their fur for soiled or wet patches of skin. Wash the area in warm water and pet shampoo before drying thoroughly.
🐇Keep an eye out for sores or wounds and keep them clean and dry.
⚠️ If you believe your rabbit has flystrike it's essential that you visit your vet immediately🧑⚕️🩺
