FLYS, FLEAS AND MAGGOTS
We publish this or a similar post most years but not normally so early. It looks like the next week or two is going to be extremely hot and summer has barely begun so please remember your cat’s welfare and comfort during this time with a simple Health and Safety check:
*Make sure your cat has access to clean, fresh water at all times, changing it at least 2-3 times a day.
*Don’t leave any wet cat food out between meal times as flies very often lay their eggs in it which can cause worms if eaten.
*Fleas are very common and extremely active in warm weather. They also cause worms and “fly strike” can happen in no time at all, not just to cats but dogs, rabbits and other domestic animals.
Double check your cat is up to date with their flea and worm treatments but if you have any doubts at all we cannot advise strongly enough that you to speak to your vet and purchase the products they recommend.
*Cats easily get upset stomachs especially in the heat and may need your help to keep themselves clean especially if they are older or long haired. Giving them a daily brush to remove loose fur helps prevent fur balls as well as leaving them feeling cooler and more comfortable. If they have a dirty bum or an open wound it is extremely important to keep the area clean as, once again, flies will lay their eggs there, maggots can quickly develop; this can be extremely serious for your cat, possibly even fatal!
*If you have a white cat it is important to use sun block on their ears every day, it can help to prevent skin cancer developing. Sphynx and other hairless cats should not be exposed to the sun at all as they burn very easily.
