Don't wait to manage post-lockdown separation fears! Be proactive in preparing your pup for when you return to work by following these simple steps⬇️
️⃣ Encourage your dog to settle in their bed when you're working from home. Start with the bed close by your feet, then gradually start to move it further away while rewarding your dog for staying in their bed.
️⃣ Spend time away from your dog, in another room or the garden.
️⃣ Provide your dog with independent, self-reinforcing activities for them to enjoy that don't involve you (e.g. chew toys, interactive feeder, a favourite toy).
️⃣ Try keep a similar routine for your dog in terms of their mealtimes, walks and periods of rest.
️⃣ Periodically leave your dog at home. If your dog is a new addition or has never been left alone before, leave them for a short 10 minutes or so before returning. Leave them with a chew or Kong to keep them entertained. You could even set up a camera to check in on them.
️⃣ When safe to do so, consider hiring a dog walker even before returning to your routine. Walks offer fun independence from you and your family, and helps provide work for dog walkers (www.myfurrytales.co.uk 😉)
️⃣ If your dog is generally anxious, try to lower that anxiety. Take note of things that may be worrying them. People walking past? Close the blinds. Noise of bikes going past? Keep a radio on. Otherwise speak to your local vet for their recommended calming and anxiety solutions.
