🐾 The Good, The Bad & The Ugly Side of Breeding 🐾

A lot of people see the cute puppy photos, the tiny paws, the puppy cuddles and think breeding is easy money or an easy hobby. The reality is very different.

Every litter is a completely new experience. No matter how much you learn, how many books you read, how many mentors you have, nature always has a way of teaching you something new.

Sometimes you get the dream litter. Mum does everything herself, puppies feed well, gain weight, sleep contentedly and everything goes to plan.

Then there are the litters where you're bottle feeding every 2 hours, day and night. Watching weights like a hawk. Sleeping beside the whelping box. Worrying over every squeak, every missed feed and every gram lost.

There are times breeders hand rear puppies because mum can't. There are times breeders help puppies fight when they are struggling. There are times breeders spend hundreds or even thousands on emergency vet visits, scans, health testing, stud fees, equipment, food, supplements and medications before a puppy is ever sold.

And then there is the ugly side that nobody wants to talk about.

The sleepless nights. The tears. The heartbreak. The puppies that don't make it. The mums that become unwell. The emergency trips to the vets at silly o'clock in the morning. The constant fear that something might go wrong.

Some breeders have even experienced the devastating loss of a mum while trying to bring life into the world. It's a risk every breeder hopes they'll never face but knows is possible.

Breeding isn't just putting two dogs together and waiting for puppies. It's responsibility, knowledge, dedication, sacrifice and sometimes having your heart broken.

Yet despite all of that, breeders continue because there is something incredibly special about watching healthy, happy puppies grow. Seeing them open their eyes for the first time. Watching their personalities develop. Matching them with families who will love them for life.

Every litter teaches you something new. Every litter humbles you. Every litter reminds you just how precious life really is.

To all the breeders currently surviving on little sleep, worrying over weights, celebrating every gain and doing everything possible for their pups and mums... you're doing an amazing job. ❀️🐾

Because breeding isn't just about producing puppies.

It's about being there for them every step of the journey. πŸΆπŸ’•

🌑️ HOT WEATHER WARNING FOR DOG OWNERS 🌑️

With temperatures rising across the UK, please think carefully before walking your dogs in the heat.

A dog missing a walk will NOT kill them... Heatstroke potentially can.

ALL dogs can struggle in hot weather, but some breeds are particularly vulnerable, especially flat-faced (brachycephalic) breeds. These breeds often suffer with breathing difficulties due to BOAS (Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome), meaning they cannot cool themselves effectively by panting. Heat and humidity can quickly become life-threatening.

⚠️ Dogs do not sweat like humans do.
⚠️ Hot pavements can burn paws.
⚠️ Cars become dangerously hot within minutes.

Please consider:
βœ… Walking very early morning or later in the evening
βœ… Keeping walks short and calm
βœ… Taking fresh water everywhere
βœ… Providing shaded, cool resting areas
βœ… Avoiding intense exercise or ball play
βœ… Monitoring for signs of heatstroke

Signs of heatstroke can include:
❌ Excessive panting
❌ Drooling
❌ Lethargy
❌ Vomiting
❌ Collapse
❌ Breathing difficulties

If your dog shows signs of heatstroke:
➑️ Move them somewhere cool immediately
➑️ Offer small amounts of cool water
➑️ Use cool (not ice cold) water on paws/body
➑️ Contact and transport to a vet urgently

πŸš— DOGS IN HOT CARS πŸš—

Please NEVER leave a dog in a vehicle during warm weather β€” even with windows open. Temperatures inside a vehicle can rise rapidly and become fatal in minutes.

If you see a dog in distress inside a vehicle:
πŸ“ž Call 999 if the situation is an emergency and the dog appears at immediate risk.
πŸ“ž Contact the RSPCA on 0300 1234 999 if possible.
πŸ“Έ Gather evidence and try to locate the owner quickly.

There are many opinions surrounding what members of the public legally can or should do in these situations. Any advice given online is intended as guidance only and not to create arguments or confrontation.

Please remember prevention is always safer than intervention.
