1st October is Veterinary Receptionist Appreciation Day!

Veterinary Receptionist Appreciation Day is celebrated by acknowledging the hard work, dedication and compassion our fabulous reception team demonstrate every day.

Veterinary Receptionists are on the front line in the veterinary profession. They are the first point of contact for clients and the voice of comfort and compassion when worried owners call for help. They are the first people you meet when you arrive at the practice, and the ones your pets will get to know as you wait for appointments. Reception is a vital role in running a successful veterinary business.

Westport Vets are lucky to have such a fantastic reception team - at all of our branches, Linlithgow, South Queensferry and Edinburgh

Thank you for the amazing work you do!🫶🏻

⚠️Emergency Case: Dog Chew Obstruction

We recently treated a dog who had to be admitted as an emergency after choking on a pig snout chew. His owner has kindly given permission for us to share his story to raise awareness of the risks.

After eating the chew, he started foaming at the mouth, gagging & retching – his owner rushed him to us right away. He was transferred to our Linlithgow branch for an emergency endoscopy under anaesthetic.

At this stage, it was unknown whether the endoscopy would be successful — surgery was a real possibility, and there was concern about the damage caused by the lodged chew. This was understandably a frightening and stressful experience for his owner.

Luckily, we managed to remove most of the chew – but not all of it. It had become wedged in his oesophagus and without treatment this could have been fatal.

We are very pleased to report that this brave dog is now home. A full recovery will be confirmed once the remaining pieces have safely passed.

⚠️ A Reminder About Chews
Many chews are very hard — posing risks of:
▪️Obstruction (anywhere in the digestive tract)
▪️Digestive issues (due to poor breakdown)
▪️Fractured teeth (from chewing hard material)

Our tip: Use the “rule of thumb” – only give chews soft enough to leave a dent with your thumbnail.

Team Westport are available 24hours if you have any concerns.

On Monday 15th September clients attended a First Aid and CPR Night in Linlithgow, with Dr. Shannon L. Thorell BVM&S BSAVA PGCertSAECC MRCVS - Advanced Practitioner in Emergency and Critical Care and Out of Hours Veterinary Surgeon at Westport Veterinary Clinic. RVN Paula, RVN Chloe and RVN Rachel (Mackay) helped out and assisted at the event.

Vet Shannon says:
"What a night! Thank you to everyone who joined us for our fully booked First Aid and CPR Night- what an amazing turn out!"

"Together we explored many topics including how to spot changes in your pet’s breathing and heartbeat, how to safely handle pets in an emergency, and key first aid topics such as bites, wounds, injuries, and CPR."

"After the presentation, guests broke into small groups for hands-on practice, perfecting bandaging skills and performing CPR on our stuffed animal 'patients."

"It was fantastic to see so many pet owners eager to be prepared for any situation and watch their confidence in tackling their own pet’s emergencies soar throughout the evening."

Fallen decaying fruit can pose a risk to inquisitive dogs and cats.

Mouldy foods and mouldy plant material can contain toxins called tremorgenic mycotoxins.

⚠️Cats or dogs who ingest food or plant material containing tremorgenic mycotoxins can become ill very quickly, often within one hour.

🔍Signs if a dog or cat has eaten mouldy food:
▪️Vomiting
▪️Wobbliness
▪️Tremors
▪️Agitation
▪️Hyperactivity
▪️High body temperature
▪️Panting
▪️In severe cases there may be convulsions.

Effects could possibly last for several days, but can also become fatal if left untreated.

If you suspect your pet has ingested anything mouldy or toxic this should always be treated as an emergency.

⭐️Hugo's Hero Award 2025 Presentation⭐️

Hugo's Hero Award was created in memory of Hugo the Hero Labrador whose loyalty helped to save his owner's life. This special annual award recognises and celebrates animals, and their acts of kindness to humans.

Hugo's Hero Award 2025 Presentation took place the evening of Friday 12th September. The event was held at Lothlorien Dog Services in Linlithgow as our Westport24 Emergency Out of Hours service is now running and busy at the Linlithgow practice.

The red carpet was rolled out to welcome the Watson family (Hugo's family), this year's winners, previous winners and canine guests to the event.

Westport Veterinary Clinic Owner and Senior Veterinary Surgeon, Stuart McMorrow, gave a presentation about Hugo, and all Hugo's heroes, before announcing this year's winners.
Guests enjoyed a video about each of this year's winning heroes, which shared their stories as told by their owners.

⭐️Hugo's Hero Award 2025 winner is Brodi, for his compassion and devotion to his family, and for the positive impact he has in their lives

⭐️Hugo's Special Recognition Award 2025 winner is Millie, for her devotion, loyalty and love for her owner Bethany.

Brodi and Millie's owners were each presented with a personalised Hugo's Hero glass award, a certificate, rosette and a gift from Westport Vets. Brodi got a 'Deluxe Waggy Bag' of dog goodies and Millie's owner was presented a canvas of Millie made up of her owner's favourite photos of her. Each winner was also presented with a gift from last year's Hugo's Hero winner Buddy.

It was a heartwarming evening which brought a lot of smiles, chuckles and at some moments there wasn't a dry eye in the house. Guests enjoyed Hugo cupcakes and refreshments from 'Buddy's Bar' and we had a special dog bar for our waggy-tailed guests with booze-themed toys, treats, and doggy wine.

Congratulations to both of this year's Hugo's Hero Award winners - such well deserved recognition for Brodi and Millie. Brodi continues to be a hero everyday and Millie will be remembered as a hero forever.

You can read Brodi and Millie's full stories, and about Hugo's and all of his heroes on Hugo's Hall of Fame on our website: https://www.westportvets.com/hugos-hero/

Harvest mites (Neotrombicula autumnalis) also called 'berry bugs' are most active between July-November.

🔸️ Tiny bright orange mites that live in soil.
🔸️ Common in woodland and grassy areas
🔸️ Attach to, and feed from, any animal - including cats and dogs!

Some cats and dogs are extremely sensitive to harvest mite saliva and develop intensely itchy, red, inflamed skin where they’ve been bitten.

🔍Signs:
▪️Tiny red/orange ‘dots’ seen on the skin and coat
▪️Itchy skin (can be intensely itchy, painful in some)
▪️Red, inflamed patches of skin
▪️Stained fur from constant licking and biting
▪️Yellow scabs and discharge.
▪️Infestations most common in between toes, on paws, legs, armpits, ge****ls, tummy, and can occasionally affect the ears.

If you give your cat or dog regular parasite treatments, it’s unlikely that they will catch harvest mites. However, it’s also sensible to avoid areas which are known for harvest mites as they could still be affected by them.

If your furry friend picks up a harvest mite infestation, they will become itchy and uncomfortable - contact your vet for treatment.
