🎃 Include Pets in Halloween Stress Free using Technology 🎃

Not all pets enjoy wearing costumes or enjoy getting involved with the excitement of Halloween. However, you can still include them in the Halloween themed fun simply by using technology!

Using a multitude of free apps and free downloads, you can edit photos and adapt videos to include pets in quite literally anything. Including pets with technology saves them from getting stressed, saves you money on costumes, and still gives everyone a little chuckle.

Whether it's to make them into a character or to add and include them with the kids in their costume or trick and treating pics, technology is a fantastic way to include pets stress free!

If you have any concerns about your pets, contact your local Westport branch today!

🎃 Beware of Toxic Treats 🎃

Owners should ensure that Halloween treats and sweets are kept out of pets' reach!

These are all toxic to pets:
⚠️ Chocolate
⚠️ Hard candy
⚠️ Sweets - including sugar-free sweets
⚠️ Carved pumpkins
⚠️ Anything containing sultanas/raisin
⚠️ Anything containing the preservative Xylitol (also called barley sugar).

As well as the risk of making pets unwell, some items can cause organ damage and could be fatal.
Many sweet items are also chocking hazards - such as wrappers, lolly sticks or plastic packaging.

If you suspect your pet has eaten anything toxic seek veterinary help immediately.

Intravenous Fluid Therapy (IVFT) is a vital treatment used daily in veterinary care.

IVFT is used to support pets through a variety of medical, surgical, and emergency situations.

💧Surgical: Maintains cardiovascular support during anaesthesia & surgery
💧Medical: Kidney disease, diabetes, anorexia, dehydration & more
💧 Emergency: Blood loss, shock, trauma—restoring volume & organ function.

🔹 IV fluids are delivered via a catheter placed in a vein—typically in the front leg, but also possible in the hind limbs, and via the ear vein in rabbits.
Subcutaneous fluids may also be used in emergencies, such as feline dehydration.

🔹 Every Pet is Unique.
Fluid therapy is carefully calculated based on each pet’s needs, factoring in maintenance, deficits & losses.

🔹 Fluid Types Matter!
From isotonic (e.g. Ringer's lactate) to hypotonic & colloids—fluids are selected based on the condition being treated.

🔹 Vet-Prescribed, Nurse-Monitored:
Our veterinary nurses monitor vital signs like heart rate, pulse, mucus membrane colour, urine output, blood pressure & more to keep your pet safe.

The nursing team plays a crucial role in ensuring effective fluid therapy and patient recovery.

🎃Halloween Can Be Scary!🎃

While we might enjoy a good scare, Halloween can be very stressful for our furry friends.

Ideally, household fancy dress costumes should be introduced gradually to pets - to help familiarise them, and to reduce stress when these are worn in their home at Halloween.

Help your pet feel calm this Halloween:
✔️ Create a safe, quiet den with water, food, litter tray (cats), and home comforts — no guest access.
✔️ Walk dogs before dark.
✔️ Keep outdoor cats in for the night & adjust feeding times in advance.
✔️ Close curtains & play pet calming music.
✔️ Keep microchip & ID tag details up to date.
✔️ Avoid leaving pets alone.
✔️ Be mindful of horror movie sound effects.

Not all pets enjoy being dressed up - for some it causes a lot of stress.
If your pet doesn't like it - dont do it.

Pet Medication for Fireworks - Plan Ahead!

Please ensure to plan ahead for fireworks in case your pet needs to be seen before medication can be dispensed.

If pets have not been seen by a vet recently, they will need an appointment with the vet for dispensing medication.

If they have been seen recently they may just require a telemedicine consult via phone or video call.

Medication may need to be ordered so planning ahead ensures you will have this organised in time.

The team can advise what you need to get this arranged. Contact via PetsApp, e-mail or phone:

As the days darken, it's vital that you and your pets stay safe.

Stay Bright = Stay Safe!
⭐️Use reflective items
reflective collars for cats
refletive leads, collars, or jackets for dogs.
⭐️Owners should also wear high viz items and consider using a torch or light up accessories.
⭐️Light up leads and collars for dogs
⭐️Walk in well lit areas
⭐️Favour walks during daylight hours
⭐️Well lit areas are also safer to avoid risk of injury from debris/broken glass
⭐️Stick to familiar routes - for you and your dog
⭐️Don't let dogs off lead in the dark
⭐️Use proper road crossing points

⚠️Don't Take Risks!

❗️Ensure pets microchip details are up to date.
❗️Ensure ID tags are up to date and legible - many wear down over time making them difficult to read.

Team Westport is here 24/7.
