🎉 Celebrating 4 Years at Beech Tree Kennels! 🎉

Four years ago today Gone Dog Grooming opened the salon doors at Beech Tree Kennels – and what a four years it’s been! 🎉

It’s been such a joy catching up with everyone when they come in for appointments – hearing your news, sharing stories, and of course fussing over your gorgeous dogs. There’s been so much laughter in the salon. The hardest part is always saying goodbye when a much-loved dog passes – they leave the biggest pawprints behind❤️🐾.

Talking of the salon being open, yesterday, instead of my usual “day off Monday/admin Tuesday” routine, I opened up to help some kennel guests head home after their Bank Holiday adventures. The line-up was:

🖤 Two Labradors
🤎 One Lab/Pointer cross
🤍 Two Cockers
🐑 One Bedlington cross

Which worked out as:
✂️ 4 full grooms
🦷 1 ultrasonic teeth clean
💅 1 nail trim & file (not painted, I promise!)
📸 and about 327 blurred photos – no prizes for guessing which breed caused that 🤣

After a busy summer, the salon will be closed today and for the next two days while I have my summer holiday part 2, and maybe even eat a GF cake to celebrate .

A huge thank you to every single one of you – for trusting me with your dogs, for all the chats, for supporting my business (with recommendations and continued custom) and for making these last four years so special. Here’s to many more years of wagging tails, laughter, and love 🐶✨.

Warning…some squeamish readers might want to skip to the photos..

When I started radiography training, one of the Consultants was known for being a bit full of himself. One weekend he broke his leg playing cricket, sneaked into a closed department, plastered it himself, and ended up with one leg shorter than the other. Tragic for him, hilarious for everyone else.

Fast-forward to me, the hair splinter, and one very sore thumb. I followed advice, but things only got worse. By mid-week, even holding scissors was agony. As this wasn’t my first rodeo in this scenario, by today, I cracked - sterile swab, sterile needle, and job done. Thumb instantly shrank.

The GP confirmed it was the right call (considering MIU refused to lance it), topped up antibiotics, and said I had done a great job. Taking photos along the way was a smart move - don’t worry, I won’t share those ones!

Moral of the story: if you’re going to play doctor, either know what you’re doing… or risk ending up lopsided. Hopefully I won’t end up with my groomer thumb looking any more strange.

Now for something much nicer - here are some of the gorgeous dogs who made my week. ❤️ One nervous boy had the best turnaround, arriving super excited for his groom, and I love seeing his confidence grow. Plus, a dachshund who enjoyed a makeover, no more resembling a Hungarian Puli which is how the owner described him to me when dropping him off 🤣.

Have a fantastic Bank Holiday weekend and hope whatever you are doing, it doesn’t involve traffic jams!

PS - thanks to Budleigh’s mum for the goodies x

Dog love…

Anybody else have the toy parade when they get in? I have to sit on the dog sofa for at least 15 minutes being licked to death and having toys shoved in my face. Oh, and not forgetting the “big sniff” to see who has had grooms today 🤣❤️.

What grass seeds are to dogs, hair splinters are for dog groomers (and also your hairdresser!).

After two handstrips on Friday, it became increasingly apparent as my thumb grew and grew over the weekend (channeling ET - glowing, throbbing, and definitely not healing anyone) was that I had a hair splinter and the handstripping had wedged it in somewhere. Could I find it? Nope..last time there was a small black line down the side of my thumb, this time..cannot find a thing..

Instead of going full DIY surgeon, squeezing out the pus and fishing the splinter myself as before, this time I have left it in the care of the professionals and am doing a full course of antibiotics to get swelling down before exploratory scalpels and hopefully able to avoid losing less thumb tissue than the DIY route. FYI - the ridge on my right thumb is the scar from last time 🙄.

Still grooming, just not requiring ring inserts in my scissors, and perhaps swearing more than usual if I knock offending digit 🤣 as it bally well hurts.

Maybe next time you go for a haircut, ask your hairdresser where they have experienced hair splinters, they get them in places that will make your eyes boggle.

🐾 Scorchio! 🐾

It’s been non-stop in the salon this week, so apologies to Wednesday’s dogs – it was wall-to-wall grooms and I didn’t even get chance for photos.

🌾 Grass seeds…
So, so many. I’m finding them in some very unpleasant places (groomer life: there are things you just can’t unsee or even unfeel 🤣).

Please check your dog after every walk – between toes, in ears, armpits, and yes, even the more sensitive areas.

These little barbed darts don’t just sit in fur. Once they pierce the skin, they only move one way – further in. They can:
• Burrow under the skin → causing swellings, abscesses and infections
• Travel internally → turning up in lungs, the spine, even vital organs
• Damage ears and eyes → punctured ear drums and corneal ulcers aren’t uncommon
• Hide in awkward spots → toes, armpits, groin, nose

By the time you notice limping, head-shaking or paw-licking, the seed may already be migrating deeper. A two-minute check after walks can literally save your dog from surgery and your wallet from an expensive bill.

The fun part this week (apart from your gorgeous dogs of course ❤️) was making sure I was in the coolest place possible in 30C heat whilst enjoying some sun - out on the water and seeing two “water Labradors” on Tuesday. Bet they don’t shed as much! Enjoy the pics and stay safe in the heat.
