I’ve introduced a brand-new system to make things simpler for everyone.

You can now request your preferred appointment slot online, and I’ll confirm and approve it. (You’re still very welcome to phone, message or email if you prefer.)

I’ve kept the online service list short and sweet to make booking quick and easy. If your dog needs something extra such as specialist skin care or mobility support - just ask when you book.

Schedule updates

I am migrating appointments over to the new system. I’m also doing 2026/2027 schedules, so if you want to change the frequency of the schedule, please let me know.

Additionally if you don’t have a schedule and would like me to set one up, again, message me. I’d rather people have the dates in the diary and if needs be reschedule if they can’t make that appointment.

Opening Hours Update

To keep up with demand, from this week, I will now be open Tuesdays until mid-afternoon 🙂.

That means five days a week of gorgeous, great-smelling dogs leaving the salon looking beautiful and feeling their best.

If your dog is staying at Beech Tree Kennels, please book as far in advance as possible. I schedule kennel grooms around my regular external clients, and Mondays and Fridays fill up months ahead - I already have bookings for Christmas 2026. I will do my utmost to fit you in, but would prefer to have your dog scheduled in advance so I can keep my diary balanced. Grooms are by appointment only as the service is 1:1.

Larger Double Coated Breeds

Big dogs.
Bigger, thicker coats.
Bigger workload.
Definitely bigger clean-ups.

There isn’t a one-size-fits-all price for these breeds. Each groom is based on time, coat condition, and schedule. If appointments slip, there’s more coat, more matting, and more work to bring everything back into shape.

Before bathing, a full pre-bath blast is needed to loosen impacted coat, grease, dirt, dead skin cells, and any matting so the shampoo can reach the skin. For longer-haired dogs, there’s often some delicate cleaning around the rear too….

The process is repeated afterwards to lift out the loosened undercoat and dry the coat thoroughly.

Once dry, each section of the coat is line brushed and de-shed, working methodically from root to tip in layers. This ensures every part of the coat is tangle-free, the undercoat is fully removed, and air can circulate down to the skin, essential for coat health and comfort.

And yes, that is me in the Santa hat. If I’m going to be covered in white hair, dirt, and grease, I might as well look like I’m having fun.

It’s skilled, physical work, but the result is a clean, comfortable, healthy coat and a very happy dog.

Total time taken for the shepherd - appx 4.5 hours (including cleaning up).

Terrier Time

A week of handstrips for Borders, and pet trims for the Cairns and a rare Sealyham. Each has their own coat texture and trim style. I’m especially pleased with Mr B. His coat was clipped somewhere when he was young, and this can ruin the coat, making it virtually impossible to handstrip. His owner brought him to me to ask if there was a way to rescue the coat, and with time and patience it is possible. 18 months later and he is now fully handstripped.

FYI Handstrip Appointments are now limited to a two appointments per week and no more than 1 dog per appointment - except for smaller Jack Russell types. My thumb has recovered but as it is now a different shape it is painful to do more than one at a time.

Autumnal Skin & Coat Care - From the Outside & In

As the “ber” months arrive, cooler air, variations in heating and muddy walks can take a toll on your dog’s skin and coat, often leaving skin dry, itchy or dull, and coats lacking their usual shine.

So, that means it’s time for extra conditioning oomph 🙂.

Here is Mr Handsome Labrador enjoying a 15-minute mineral-rich mud treatment, designed to:
🐾 Draw out impurities
🐾 Calm irritation and rebalance the skin
🐾 Deeply condition the coat
🐾 Boost circulation and promote relaxation

The gentle massage helps stimulate blood flow, nourishing the skin and coat from the roots up, and most dogs find it wonderfully soothing too, some even shut their eyes and start to doze off.

However, healthy skin starts inside as well…so if your dog isn’t booked in for a conditioning boost, you can try conditioning sprays at home along with some additions or changes to the diet.

To help your dog glow from the inside out, try adding these nourishing foods to their winter diet:

🐾 Omega-3s – salmon, sardines, mackerel, flaxseed or chia oil (for moisture & shine)
🐾 Biotin & B Vitamins – eggs, liver, spinach, oats (for strong, healthy hair growth)
🐾 Vitamins A & E – carrots, pumpkin, kale, blueberries, sunflower seeds (for cell renewal & skin repair)

There is a downside however, if you have a windy Labrador, they may wake themselves up with their own bodily noises 🤣.
