This Week/ Dog Summer coats

It’s been a lovely mix of dogs this week, including some real rarities – a Clumber Spaniel and a Norfolk Terrier, which you don’t see every day, in fact the Clumber Spaniel is on the vulnerable breed list.

When the Norfolk was in this morning for hand-stripping, and while he looked fabulous afterwards, I was sneezing like mad – thanks to a full house of dust, dander and pollen in his coat!
It’s a good reminder that dogs really do carry the outside world in with them – especially in their paws, ears and coat. If your dog is licking, chewing, or has patches of redness, they may be reacting to topical allergens like grass, dust, or mould spores. It’s incredibly common this time of year.

I’ve been recommending products like DOUXO S3 Calm or NutraCare Itch-Eeze, which help support sensitive skin and soothe itchiness. They can be a gentle but effective way to help your dog feel more comfortable – especially when used alongside regular paw washing after walks. If you’re not already using one, portable paw washers are a good piece of kit to have, other models available but here is an example: https://amzn.eu/d/3QSeI5f

Enjoy the weekend!

Grooming Isn’t Just About Appearance — It’s About Trust.

This is a long one, but bear with me.

We all know at least one dog that may carry memories of pain, trauma, or fear — whether from injury, surgery (like my own Harry, my bionic-hipped Cocker!), or past experiences. Others are rescues or simply new to grooming altogether. Every dog deserves to be heard — and treated with understanding.

As a fully qualified groomer, I work with all kinds of dogs — from those who jump happily onto the table (or even run and open the salon door, then jump on the table 🤣), to those needing extra patience. Calming and desensitising nervous dogs is a specialised skill, built from additional training and experience, and it’s something I’m proud to offer.

I practise consent-based grooming — using patience, encouragement, and gentle desensitisation.
If a dog isn’t comfortable with a certain area, I won’t force them just for the sake of appearances. Full groom price still applies (as stated in my terms and conditions), because emotional support and time are just as important as the groom itself, as is building the relationship with your dog.

Sometimes it’s about gentle distraction or working around sensitive areas. Other times, if a dog is too distressed or aggressive, I will recommend sedation through a vet — the safest and kindest option.

Recently, a dog who had previously needed sedation for anxiety spent a full Reiki session here calmly lying on the table — and just a week later, had a full groom completed without stress. Trust makes all the difference.

Sadly, a trend has grown online showing dogs in obvious distress during grooming. I want to be very clear: I do not, and will never, condone that. A dog’s trust should never be broken for entertainment or to get the biggest number of “likes” for a social media post. That is not what I am about.

You’ll notice my photos aren’t just “after” shots. I believe in showing dogs relaxed, playing, and enjoying the process — because that’s the experience I want them to have. Grooms with me should be a fun and enjoyable experience for your dog, plus I get amazing job satisfaction too!

If you’d like to learn more about the techniques I use, I recommend a brilliant book written by the amazing Sue Williamson (designed for puppies, but perfect for dogs of any age!). It’s one of a series, but this is great for starting from scratch at home.

And what more of a handsome boy, who once couldn’t bear having his feet or nails touched.
Today? Sat proud and peaceful with nails done and feet trimmed, not batting an eyelid — and thoroughly enjoying his massage at the end.

Gentle handling works, it may take time, but long term it is the best option for your dog. Kindness and trust matter.

Wishing you a very Happy Easter!
The gang and I are taking a little break but will be back in the salon from Tuesday. That said, they seem to have disappeared and been replaced with the Easter Bunny and helpers…

Enjoy a relaxing weekend and remember to keep the chocolate, hot cross buns, any sweets, xylitol containing items and carrot cake (Harry has just tried snaffling mine) away from enquiring snouts.

Genetics 🧬

I had an annual leave day on Wednesday (a rarity) and spent it at Wildwood seeing some gorgeous animals. The bears were out playing in the woods – and yes, I can confirm they do do “that” in the woods. The wolves were enjoying the sun too, a deshed groom on one of those would definitely take a bit longer than usual…

I think we all know that dogs are genetically descended from wolves, but did you know that they also share a distant family link with bears. Their last common ancestor lived around 42 million years ago. So technically, your dog and the bears in these photos are distant cousins.

Back in the salon, it was a real treat to do a puppy groom for a Sealyham Terrier this week – only 136 puppies were registered with the Kennel Club in 2023. They’re on the vulnerable native breeds list, which makes every one of them extra special. They have the most amazing temperament and the spots, just beautiful.

Here are some of the other dogs from this week. Have a great weekend!

Easter Update 🐇

As most of you know, the salon is sometimes closed on a Tuesday so I can have a day off to run business errands, do accounts, purchasing etc.

As the weather was so lovely today, those errands may have slipped to this evening 👀. The day was too good to stay indoors, so at the invite for a coffee from a camp stove, sat in fields admiring the owner’s lambs, it was too good an opportunity to pass up. There is fresh air, then there is FRESH air 😂.

Anyhow, here are the opening hours for the next few weeks:
Wed 9th: Closed
Thurs 10th – Mon 14th: Usual hours – fully booked
Tues 15th: Closed
Wed 16th – Thurs 17th: Usual hours – fully booked
Good Friday & Easter Monday: Closed
Back to the usual schedule on Tues 23rd April

I do have a cancellation list running, as clients sometimes need to rearrange – just let me know if you’d like to be added.

Here are the dogs from yesterday, and thanks to the owners for the lovely feedback. Oh, and as they were so gorgeous, here are a couple of the lambs from today.

🌞 Sunshine…

This photo of Harry popped up on my timeline today – taken on the 5th of April 2020 during lockdown. Remember how hot it was that summer? Well, today and this week are looking to be on the warm side too.

Being a typical Brit, I’m not going to complain…however with the weather heating up and the sun directly hitting the salon in the afternoons, it can get pretty toasty – even with my air conditioning unit running. To keep your dogs (and myself) comfortable and safe, I may need to bring some appointments forward to earlier in the day when it’s cooler and before the sun hits.

I’ll be keeping a close eye on the weather forecasts (even if they’re not always spot on). If I think the salon might get too warm, I’ll get in touch to offer alternative times. It might be a bit of an inconvenience, but it’s all about making sure your dogs are comfortable and safe.

Thanks

Cake…

No grooming for me today..I booked the day off ages ago. One of my clients asked me in the week if I ever take time off. When it’s your own business and you love what you do, it doesn’t always seem like a job. However, my son turns a big 15, and time is precious - it’s important to spend time with loved ones. Plus, after 12 hours of hand stripping this week, my hands look like they’ve been caught up in a dodgy trade deal…

Some of the dogs this week were either posing like the White House Press Secretary, and some like Chris Mason so photos vary. First Aid also renewed 👍.

Anyway, the sun’s out, it’s the weekend and there is cake (gluten free for the coeliac in the house 👋). Enjoy the sunshine ☀️
