🎓 Graduation time at The WHOLE Dog! 🎓

We’ve had some wonderful students complete both our The WHOLE Puppy and The WHOLE Dog foundation classes recently – and just look at those proud faces! 🥹💛

Our foundation classes are the heart of what we do (and always will be). They give dogs and their humans the tools to build strong, positive relationships that last a lifetime. We love celebrating the end of the course by creating a little keepsake photo with one of our favourite tricks – “paws up” 🙌🐶

From tiny pups just starting out in the world to older dogs learning new skills, we’re so proud of every single team who graduates with us.

If you were with us back then, you’ll definitely remember the stress leading up to it (we certainly do 😅) — but what an incredible day it turned out to be!

Fast forward 2 years, and we’re doing a whole new kind of organising…

We’ve been blown away by the number of you who’ve signed up already — our inboxes are absolutely flooded with questions (which makes us so happy to see how excited you all are!). ❤️

📌 Many of the most common questions are answered in our handy PDF, available to download from our Daycare page on the website.
But don’t worry — if you’ve messaged us, we’ll be in touch with you individually very soon!

🐾 We’ve also had a few spaces open up! As we’ve been moving dogs around who didn’t mind which day they attended, we’ve reshaped groups to be even more compatible.

This means a little extra availability has popped up — we’ll be posting the new spaces later this week, so it’s not too late to join us.

Work has officially commenced on the units too 🛠️ (we had a few things to sort for our licence), and we can’t wait to start sharing little snippets of the progress with you all.

🐾 Happy National Dog Day! 🐾

Every single day, we feel so grateful to be surrounded by dogs — not just our own at home, but the extended family of wonderful dogs we get to spend time with through The WHOLE Dog.

Each one brings something unique: the comedians who keep us laughing, the thoughtful souls who watch and learn, the snugglers who remind us to pause, and the free spirits who fill the room with joy.

As we look ahead to opening our daycare, we’re so excited to welcome even more dogs into this extended family. We can’t wait to build those same special bonds with the dogs who will join us there.

Today is a celebration of all of them. Thank you for trusting us to be part of your dog’s journey — our lives are brighter and fuller because of them. 💛🐶

We’re back! 🌿🐾

I don’t think we realised how much we needed that time away until we stopped.

A week of dogs, our people and just… breathing.

It’s been a couple of years since either of us actually took a proper break — the business has always come first, and life has a way of piling on too.

We love what we do (probably a bit too much at times), but stepping back reminded us how important it is to pause.

Now we’re home, feeling reset, grateful, and ready to get moving again.

The dogs are happy, we’re happy, and it feels good to have that spark back. ✨

We’re down to our 𝐅𝐈𝐍𝐀𝐋 𝟒 spaces at The WHOLE Dog Academy — all on 𝐅𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐲𝐬! 🎉

We’re on the hunt for 4 fabulous dogs to complete our very first Friday Academy class.

Think of it as filling the last seats in the classroom — our roll call is almost complete! ✨

What our “students” can expect:

📝 Small, structured classes (no more than 10 dogs a day)
🎓 Learning woven into care — manners, recall, impulse control
💤 Proper rest time (because even the brightest pupils need breaks)
⭐ A supportive environment led by experienced “teachers”

And here’s the best bit… imagine picking up a happy, fulfilled dog on a Friday evening, ready to settle into a calm, chilled weekend with you. 🐾💛

A dog coming home “tired” isn’t always a success story.
Sometimes, it’s a warning sign.

That flopped-out, glassy-eyed dog might look like they’ve had the best day ever — but if they’ve spent the entire day in high gear, they may be running on adrenaline and stress hormones, not satisfaction and fulfilment.

Here’s the science bit: stress hormones like cortisol can stay in a dog’s system for hours after a busy, noisy, over-stimulating day.
They don’t just burn off when the play stops. That means the “tired” you see isn’t always the healthy kind — and it can make it harder for dogs to settle, sleep, or stay balanced at home.

🐾 𝐍𝐨𝐭 𝐀𝐥𝐥 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐲 𝐈𝐬 𝐆𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐲

Play is one of the most valuable things dogs can do at daycare.
It’s how they burn energy, practise social skills, and build confidence.
It’s fun, it’s natural — and when done right, it’s incredibly beneficial.

But here’s the part many people don’t realise: not all play is good play.

In many daycares, rough, unregulated play is left to run unchecked.
Dogs race around for hours, wrestling, body-slamming, barking in each other’s faces, or chasing relentlessly. It looks exciting, but here’s the problem:

When no one steps in to manage it, dogs aren’t learning good habits — they’re rehearsing bad ones.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐑𝐢𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐄𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐁𝐚𝐝 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐲

Unbalanced play can cause problems that show up well beyond the daycare walls:

𝐏𝐨𝐨𝐫 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐮𝐥𝐬𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐥 - dogs who get used to ignoring “stop” signals in play will ignore them in other contexts too.

𝐅𝐫𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 – constantly playing without structure can make dogs impatient or snappy when they can’t get what they want.

𝐑𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐬𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬 – behaviours like body-slamming, neck-grabbing, or over-pinning can become a default way to interact.

𝐎𝐯𝐞𝐫-𝐚𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐚𝐥 – too much high-energy play without breaks can make dogs more wired at home, not calmer.

We’ve seen dogs return from certain daycares with worsened behaviour at home — pulling more on the lead, barking more at other dogs, or being less able to settle.
It’s not that play is bad… it’s that it needs guidance.

𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐖𝐞 𝐃𝐨 𝐈𝐭 𝐃𝐢𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐥𝐲 𝐚𝐭 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐖𝐇𝐎𝐋𝐄 𝐃𝐨𝐠 𝐀𝐜𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐲

Here, play isn’t just a free-for-all to fill the hours.

It’s one of our best teaching tools.
We use it to:

✅ 𝐆𝐮𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐬𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 – our trainers know when to let the game continue and when to pause it for everyone’s benefit.
✅ 𝐓𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡 𝐝𝐨𝐠𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟-𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞 – helping them practise calming down after a burst of energy.
✅ 𝐑𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐜𝐞 𝐠𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬 – rewarding dogs for polite play and for respecting each other’s boundaries.
✅ 𝐁𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐚𝐲 – mixing high-energy moments with enrichment, training, and proper rest.
✅ 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐜𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐬 – pairing dogs by temperament and play style so the game is fair and fun.

Because social skills aren’t something dogs either have or don’t have — they’re learned, practised, and strengthened with the right environment.
And when dogs learn to play well, they carry those skills into every part of their life.

Over the years, we’ve had to suggest that many dogs stop attending certain daycares — not because they were “bad” dogs, but because the experience was damaging their wellbeing.

These dogs were coming home worse, not better.

More anxious.
More reactive.
More on edge — and it lasted well beyond their day at daycare.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐲 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬:

Dogs who are already struggling — overwhelmed, anxious, over-aroused, or socially unsure — are often the ones who get labelled as the “problem.”

The ones who:

Bark too much

Can’t seem to settle

Don’t play “nicely”

Or react too strongly

And what do they get in return?

❌ Correction
❌ Isolation
❌ Punishment
❌ Or a firm note sent home: “Not suitable for daycare”

Barking, avoidance, growling, hu***ng, lunging — these aren’t signs of defiance.
They’re signs of discomfort.

Not disrespect. Distress.

And yet, instead of asking “What’s happening for this dog?”, many daycares double down:

You can’t punish chaos into calm.
You can’t scare a dog into confidence.
And shutting a dog up is not the same as helping them cope.

At The WHOLE Dog Academy, we don’t ignore behavioural struggles.
But we do approach them with:

💛 Understanding – looking at the “why” before deciding “what next”
💛 Compassion – meeting the dog where they are, not where we wish they were
💛 A plan – to help the dog feel safe enough to learn and change

We ask:

Why is this dog barking?

What about this environment is too much?

How can we reduce stress and increase choice?

Then we take action — not to shut them down, but to bring them back into balance.

This doesn’t mean no boundaries.

We have them.

But our boundaries are calm and fair.
We teach alternative behaviours.
We build resilience.
We help dogs find coping strategies that actually work for them.

Because for us, it’s not just about behaviour.
