Some of you may have noticed we have a new vet....introducing Hettie. Hettie may be a familiar face to many, having lived in the area with her own horses for a few years and spent time seeing practice with us before joining the team- we knew she would be a wonderful fit for us and our clients so we are thrilled she has joined us! So far she's enjoying all asked of veterinary practice but particularly loves getting to know our wonderful clients and their horses. When not at work Hettie loves going on walks in the peaks and enjoys a good book. Welcome Hettie.

WHAT 3 WORDS
“The signal is terrible, the postcode is the same for the whole area and its pitch black”
Unfortunately this is a situation many of our vets are faced with when trying to find a yard. Add to that the visit is an urgent one and both the vet and client are feeling stressed and anxious to arrive as soon as possible. Help us to help you by using What3Words when telling us your horse’s location.

What3Words is an FREE app we all have on our phones and with 3 unique words we are directed to the exact location of your yard. This is time saving in an emergency, human or animal and can literally save lives. Download the app or find your yards location on their website and keep a record of the unique 3 words. Writing this down on the yard noticeboard can be helpful for everyone and we can keep a record on your account too.

Find, share and navigate to precise locations | what3words. Download the free what3words app to find, share and save exact locations using just three words.

Here comes the rain - here comes the grass!!

While many of us are excited to see our fields coming back to life, this sudden growth brings some risks. The rapid spring-like flush can put your horses at risk of insulin spikes and laminitis, so it's important to keep a close eye on them.

Laminitis First Aid
If your horse presents with signs of laminitis (reluctant to walk, pulses/heat in feet or struggling on stones more) there are a few steps you can take to provide first aid and keep them more comfortable.
1) Remove from grass and start box rest.
2) Provide a deep bed to give the foot some support. Shavings is our current recommendation.
3) Remove hard feed and give hay that has been soaked for at least 8 hours.
4) Call your vet. We will always offer to visit a laminitic case to provide pain relief, ascertain the cause and to make a more long term plan.

August Success Story - Banksy
Vet Anna first met Banksy back in March 2024 when his owner booked onto our popular gastroscope clinic. She had been experiencing ridden issues and when we dug deeper it transpired she couldn't pick his hind feet out without someone holding him and even then it was a nerve racking experience!
Part of our gastroscope clinic deal is an orthopaedic examination- this revealed Banksy had weak core muscles and a dipped back which was painful on palpation. He was also bilaterally lame behind. Following investigation he was diagnosed with gastric ulcers and hock osteoarthritis with secondary back muscle pain and postural weakness. Within 2 months of treatment of his hock osteoarthritis and gastric ulcers, his owner was able to pick out his hind feet on her own for the first time in a year! He didnt require any medication for his back problems but by treating the underlying cause and following a strict rehabilitation plan he is back looking better than ever- he is an absolute credit to his owners dedication.
We checked in with his owner recently and this is the update we recieved:

"Banksy is doing amazingly, he’s feeling so good this year and much more confident in his body! He was second at Cheshire in the inhand geldings out of 17, and we’re off to camp on Monday. He’s had his saddle fitted today and she couldn’t believe the difference in him and how much better he is looking. We wouldn’t be where we are now without you!"

Does your horse lose shoes, struggle to grow much foot, have cracked or brittle feet or has suffered with/ is currently suffering with laminitis? If so read on....

EquiBioHoof is a veterinary grade hoof supplement that is guaranteed to improve hoof quality and growth rate and result in thicker, stronger hoof walls with reduced cracks and brittleness. This product comes with a money back guarantee if you don’t see an improvement after feeding EquiBioHoof for 150 consecutive days. In addition, this product has ZERO SUGAR making it a great option for all horses and ponies.
The hoof is an amazing structure which needs to be light weight and flexible while withstanding constant concussion and trauma. The high moisture content of the horse’s hoof gives it the ability to absorb concussive forces preventing wear and tear of the internal structures. Inadequate moisture or nutrition results in hoof horn breaking down, presenting as cracks, brittle hooves and shoes falling off! EquiBioHoof is scientficially proven to provide the nutrients required to maintain a healthy horn production.

By purchasing a veterinary grade supplement, you are able to guarantee the ingredients are fully researched and traceable, are being fed at a therapeutic level with high bio-availability (so body can absorb and use it!) with no fillers or bulking ingredients. In addition, the money back guarantee means you can feed EquiBioHoof with full confidence you are providing your horse or pony with the best supplement available. Call us to find out more 💪

Our vets were busy last week running weigh clinics! Niamh visited Mill Hill Farm for a 3-month check-up and was thrilled with the results—some horses had sustainably lost 30kg, and their owners noticed huge improvements in all aspects! Meanwhile, Annie spent time with Pony Club at Somerford camp, teaching about body condition scoring and ideal weights. Well done to everyone who worked hard to make management changes. Carrying extra weight affects all aspects of a horse’s health and increases the risk of disease. It’s tough work, but seeing the happiness on our clients’ faces proves it’s worth it!

Last week, one of our head nurses, Louise, visited Mill Hill Farm to give a talk on effective first aid for horses, with a special focus on wound management—though not everyone seemed convinced it was worth their time!
Lou also led a bandaging masterclass, teaching proper technique and how to apply the right amount of pressure. When an owner handles a wound correctly before the vet arrives, it greatly aids the vet’s work and significantly reduces bacteria in the wound

We rarely need an excuse for tea and cake but this week we felt there was a special reason- to thank our team for all their hard work especially recently when it's been very busy at W&M. The whole team stopped for 15 minutes and enjoyed a brew and home made cake together 💕 🍰☕💕

LONG REINING- Do you love it or hate it?
We love it here at Wright and Morten and we often incorporate long reining into our rehabilitation plans. When performed correctly it is a powerful tool for building stability, strength, suppleness and confidence without the weight of a rider. Whether you're starting a young horse, rehabbing an old friend or just looking for a productive way to work your horse from the ground, long reining offers low-impact benefits. Long reining can be performed in an arena, in the field, on the roads (where safe) or even around the yard. Poles are a great addition to increase the intensity and benefit to the horse where appropriate to do so. Here are some of our team members out long reining their own horses as part of their weekly exercise programme 💪💪
