JP first presented to our clinic in July 2020 as a 7 year old who had recently started struggling with canter. A lameness investigation lead to a diagnosis of bilateral hind limb Proximal Suspensory Desmitis (PSD). After an in-depth discussion of the treatment options and the expected prognosis for long term soundness, his owners who opted to treat him surgically for this condition.
JP underwent a general anaesthesia in our purpose build in-house theatre here at Somerford Parl Farm and the operation was successfully carried out by Claire. Post operatively JP was cared for by our amazing team of vets, qualified nurses and nursing assistances. After 48 hours JP was able to return home. Following a short period of box rest JP could resume turnout and begin his rehab. The rehabilitation for this condition is a very important to build strength and retrain the horseโs way of going. JPโs owners were fully committed and worked closely with ourselves, his physiotherapist and farrier- and it paid off. JP made a full recovery and his performance and lameness issues were resolved- he was back out competing the following season and having a great time!
However, as with horses it doesnโt always go smoothlyโฆ.. After 3 successful seasons competing JP moved yards and unfortunately a few months after he developed a cough. Following a consultation JP was booked in for endoscopic examination and sampling which is performed under standing sedation. This procedure allows visualisation of the nasal passages, larynx and trachea and for samples to be taken from both the upper and lower airways to look for evidence of inflammation, infection, presence of mucus etc which helps us target our treatment. Based on these samples, JP was diagnosed with Equine Asthma. Despite his owner being fully on board with all our recommended treatments, JPโs respiratory issues continued to progress over the year to the point where he was un-rideable and repeated endoscopes consistently revealed mucus and inflammation (see pictures!). Left with no other options, his owners followed Hannahโs advice to move yard to change his environment. And WOW what a difference this made- within 3 months he was back competing in dressage and is now ready for the season ahead.
Seeing horses and owners back out enjoying themselves really does make our job worthwhile and we are grateful to recieve such lovely feedback โฌโฌโฌ
