Does your horse turn his nose up at oral medication? Here are a few tips to encourage compliance:
- Feed bute in a dry feed- adding water alters the taste and makes it unpalatable for some horses
- Add flavour to the hard feed to disguise the medication- eg mint, mollasses, flavoured chaff
- If feeding multiple oral medications split them into different feeds to reduce the risk of the horse refusing each feed
- Small tablets such as Prascend or Equioxx can be fed in a small piece of vegetable eg carrot - this is useful for horses who aren't normally given a hard feed or to ensure they ingest the small tablet and don't waste it.
- If your horse is in a group environment, separate them while being fed to ensure the medication is ingested by the right horse!
- Discuss the options with your vet- we can sometimes prescribe alternative options for the more fussy horses eg swopping from oral powder to oral tablet, using a medication that is fed once a day rather than twice a day or a flavoured alternative.

Farewell for now, but not goodbye!

We had a bittersweet moment last week as we said goodbye to Abi, who has set off on an exciting new adventure with an internship at Leahurst Liverpool Equine Hospital. Abi has been with us since graduating, and itโ€™s been a pleasure watching her grow into the fantastic vet she is today. While weโ€™ll miss her greatly, we know sheโ€™ll be a wonderful addition to the team at Leahurst.

Weโ€™re also grateful for our strong relationship with Leahurst, so weโ€™re sure this isnโ€™t the last weโ€™ll hear from Abi!

Wishing her all the best on this next chapter!

JP first presented to our clinic in July 2020 as a 7 year old who had recently started struggling with canter. A lameness investigation lead to a diagnosis of bilateral hind limb Proximal Suspensory Desmitis (PSD). After an in-depth discussion of the treatment options and the expected prognosis for long term soundness, his owners who opted to treat him surgically for this condition.

JP underwent a general anaesthesia in our purpose build in-house theatre here at Somerford Parl Farm and the operation was successfully carried out by Claire. Post operatively JP was cared for by our amazing team of vets, qualified nurses and nursing assistances. After 48 hours JP was able to return home. Following a short period of box rest JP could resume turnout and begin his rehab. The rehabilitation for this condition is a very important to build strength and retrain the horseโ€™s way of going. JPโ€™s owners were fully committed and worked closely with ourselves, his physiotherapist and farrier- and it paid off. JP made a full recovery and his performance and lameness issues were resolved- he was back out competing the following season and having a great time!

However, as with horses it doesnโ€™t always go smoothlyโ€ฆ.. After 3 successful seasons competing JP moved yards and unfortunately a few months after he developed a cough. Following a consultation JP was booked in for endoscopic examination and sampling which is performed under standing sedation. This procedure allows visualisation of the nasal passages, larynx and trachea and for samples to be taken from both the upper and lower airways to look for evidence of inflammation, infection, presence of mucus etc which helps us target our treatment. Based on these samples, JP was diagnosed with Equine Asthma. Despite his owner being fully on board with all our recommended treatments, JPโ€™s respiratory issues continued to progress over the year to the point where he was un-rideable and repeated endoscopes consistently revealed mucus and inflammation (see pictures!). Left with no other options, his owners followed Hannahโ€™s advice to move yard to change his environment. And WOW what a difference this made- within 3 months he was back competing in dressage and is now ready for the season ahead.

Seeing horses and owners back out enjoying themselves really does make our job worthwhile and we are grateful to recieve such lovely feedback โฌ‡โฌ‡โฌ‡
