World Horse Welfare

World Horse Welfare Inspiring people to put the horse at the centre of how they think, care and act for almost a century.

In the United Kingdom, we have four Rescue and Rehoming Centres and a network of full-time welfare Field Officers. Overseas, we provide communities with the skills and training to care for their working horses and so improve their livelihoods. We also deliver high-profile and effective international campaigns to promote the welfare of horses. We support the responsible use of horses in sport, bein

g the welfare arm of the FEI and an advisor to the British Horseracing Authority. Please note we cannot process reports about horses in distress via social media - if you are concerned for the welfare of a horse you can find out how to report a situation to us by visiting www.worldhorsewelfare.org/report.

Meet Tess 💙

Rescued as a foal and rehomed from World Horse Welfare Glenda Spooner Farm as a two-year-old, Tess has grown into a lovely 17hh Shire mare.

When Kath, her rehomer, first met Tess, she knew she'd found her dream horse:

"When I went to meet Tess, it was love at first sight. I'd always wanted a Shire but never thought I'd be able to have one. When I saw Tess appear on World Horse Welfare's website, I couldn't believe my eyes."

Since then, Tess has blossomed and is known for her huge personality, love of food and being pampered. She's become a local celebrity on her hacking routes, with admirers wherever she goes.

Kath says: "Tess is my soul mate, my emotional support and my best friend. She makes me laugh, cheers me up, calms me down and doesn't ask for anything in return."

Every rescued horse has the potential to change a life. Tess's story is a wonderful reminder of what can happen when a horse is given a second chance and a loving home. If you’re interested in rehoming yourself, take a look at some of our wonderful horses and ponies here: https://bit.ly/4vhdpWq

Is this a myth? Let us know in the comments 👇

The horse world is full of ‘myths’ about some of the things that horses do – without recognising that many of these behaviours are due to pain.

Myth busted: Horses are a highly social species that require regular contact with other horses. If the horses are introduced slowly and provided with suitable resources to reduce the risk of conflict, then the risk of injury is reduced.

Horses that have been kept in isolation for most of their lives and/or have poorly developed social skills, can learn how to interact with other horses safely. This will require time, patience and empathetic, systematic training. We strongly advise seeking help from an equine behaviour professional in these circumstances.

Many communities around the world cherish their horses and donkeys, and their livelihoods depend on these hard-working animals. Yet large numbers are suffering from preventable injuries, illness and exhaustion simply because their owners lack access to the basic resources needed to care for them.

That’s why we work closely alongside local organisations, governments and owners to shape training, education and welfare solutions that reflect the day-to-day realities of working horses and those who rely on them.

With your support, we can reach more horses, donkeys and mules in remote communities and build lasting change. Find out how you can help today 👉 https://bit.ly/4dAeWRw

It’s Horse of the Week time! Everyone meet Sonny! 🐴

Sonny is a lovely 12hh gelding who is looking for a loving new home.

Sonny is ready to rehome as a youngster for handling. He was completely unhandled on arrival and his groom has worked hard to gain his trust and build up his confidence. He is a lovely little pony, who has an inquisitive nature and is good to catch, handle, groom and for the farrier, and just needs a quiet approach with the vet. He gets on well with others and is currently living out with a group of geldings with shelter but will come into a stable as part of a routine to be groomed and for weight management.

📌 Sonny is based at World Horse Welfare Penny Farm, Lancashire

Can you offer this lovely boy a home? Find out more 👉 https://bit.ly/4wAS9wx

Equine flu cases are currently rising across the UK‼️

Good biosecurity plays an important role in helping to prevent the spread of disease and protect horses on your yard and beyond. With horses travelling more during the summer season, taking simple biosecurity precautions is more important than ever.

Make sure you’re following these key biosecurity practices:

𝗕e aware and know the signs of infection
𝗜solate any horses showing symptoms
𝗢bserve all horses on the yard
𝗦eek veterinary advice
𝗘ngage with other horse owners on the yard
𝗖leanliness is key
𝗨se PPE
𝗥eport confirmed cases through your vet or equine infectious disease surveillance
𝗜mmunity – vaccinate against common diseases
𝗧rack where horses have been
𝗬our horse is part of a much bigger picture – protect them to help protect others.

A year on from their rescue from horrific conditions, we thought it was time to update you on our Trafficked 20 horses ❤️‍🩹

In December 2024, Dover port officials stopped a lorry carrying horses travelling illegally, including a foal too weak to stand. Like the Dover 26, we suspect some were being trafficked for fattening and slaughter.

Eight of the horses, including frightened foals and a pregnant mare, came into the care of our Hall Farm Rescue and Rehoming Centre in Norfolk.

A year on, many are now thriving thanks to the dedicated care of the Hall Farm team.

We caught up with Centre Manager Sue Hodgkins, who shares more about their rescue and how they’re doing today 👉 https://bit.ly/43r3LVk
