Paws in the Shade: How to Keep Your Dog Safe and Cool During a Heatwave
When the temperature spikes, our furry best friends feel the heat just as much as we do—often more! Because dogs don't sweat the way humans do (they mostly cool down by panting and through their paw pads), heatwaves can quickly become dangerous for them.
Keeping your pup safe, comfortable, and cool doesn’t have to be complicated. Here is how I'm keeping pups safe in my care, along with a few simple ways you can help your dog beat the heat at home:
1. Adapting Our Routine: Early Mornings and Home Visits
To protect dogs from scorching afternoon temperatures, as a dog walker I have switched to early morning walks or home visits on the appropriate days.
Early Morning Outings: Walks are scheduled for the coolest part of the day when the air and pavement are safe.
Switched to Home Visits: On peak heatwave days, we transition to indoor home visits instead of outdoor walks. These visits focus on indoor playtime, fresh water, and quick bathroom breaks in the shade to avoid the dangerous midday sun and hot pavement altogether.
The Pavement Test: Asphalt absorbs and retains intense heat. If you're heading out on your own, place the back of your hand on the pavement for 5 seconds. If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s far too hot for your dog’s paws!

It’s taken 2 hours to reorganise the whole schedule for next week- a lot of back and forthing to make sure everyone is happy and the dogs will be happy 😮‍💨
