We have had this boy handed in to us last week by one of our clients who was concerned about him as he was always outside in the same place absolutely flea ridden and starving. He he a young male in tact kitten. Extremely extremely friendly and wants constant cuddles 🥰. He has no microchip. We are looking for a RESCUE SPACE for him as we do not have the ability to care for him how he deserves, since we are very busy with sick patients and we are closed on the weekends so no one is here for him. IF HE IS YOURS- please get in touch! IF YOU CAN OFFER A HOME OR RESCUE SPACE!! Please get in touch, and please share this post.

Happy Friday from the team and from Bagheera Stripes! Bagheera belongs to one of our lovely clients Caroline who bought him this extremely fabulous and summery preventative collar to use after his castration surgery.

Bagheera is the sweetest natured little boy and has recovered perfectly from his op. He’s always a pleasure to see but he is constantly on the move and almost never stays still, making our head nurse Emily’s life a bit more exciting during post operative check ups.

We encourage all our client to bring any useful bits they have purchased to help thier pets stay with us more pleasant or recovery more engaging.

LEARNING POINTS
A preventative collar is used to protect surgical sites from patient interference
If patient interference occurs this could cause an infection and require antibiotics

Thankyou Caroline for letting us use his cutie little fur face on our social media :)

Hello friends.

Today we would like to tell you a story of a very special and brave doglet, called Cookie.

Cookies owners, brought her in at the start of August as amoung other things… Cookie was drinking a lot more than normal and weeing a lot more than normal.

Richard recommended some blood and urine tests to make sure Cookies organs were all working as they should.

It turned out that Cookie had a double whammy of problems. She had Canine Pancreatitis, and Diabetes.

Cookie was immediately started on insulin. Even though this was extremely overwhelming and unexpected for her owners, they stepped up immediately- putting little Cookie first and foremost, and long began an epic period of Cookie coming for blood glucose checksand insulin injections, and in these appointments- her owners practiced, with Richard’s guidance - how to give the injections at home.

With Cookies Pancreatitis and a subsequent urine infection to boot, it was especially hard to get her glucose levels stable, but we are getting there slowly now.

It’s taken an antibiotic course, some extra pain relief, a change of insulin type and dosage, a Free Style Libra device and lots and lots of patience and perseverance from Cookies mummies, and the whole Medivet Team (especially Alex who became absolutely besotted with Cookie) ….but finally Cookies levels are getting better, she is not drinking or utinating excessively anymore, she is happier and bright as a shiny little button. 🥰

Cookie always attends her appointments with an heir of “I love you guys, but what are you gonna do to me this time” and we always feel guilty - but really she is such a brave little soldier and definitely brings the sunshine wherever she treads despite it all.

We love you Cookie. We know you’ll be visiting auntie Alex for your diabetes management but we look forward to supporting your ongoing care whenever you may need us.

LEARNING TAKEAWAYS:

1. Excessive drinking and urineation can be a sign of diabetes or another endocrine disturbance

2. Diabetes is a lifelong condition that needs to be carefully managed

3. Freestyle Libra is a Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) system. Designed for humans with Type 1 and 2 Diabetes, but can also be used with animals aiding in accuracy of readings, reducing unpleasant owner interaction, and therefore better management of the condition and quality of life for all involved

Thankyou to Cookies 🍪 Mummies for allowing us to share thier story

Dear clients.

We would just like to express our thanks to those of you who have shown us your patience over these last couple of weeks and days. Richard has been on his holidays, and no cover could be found for some of his time off. We would like to thank anyone who waited, anyone who moved thier appointment, or who had to visit another one of our local branches.

The nurses are extremely grateful for your understanding.

We would also like to extend our heartfelt thanks to our vet Alexandra Palaiologou who covered us on as many days as possible.

We are very sad to announce that Alex is no longer a permanent fixture of the Wexham practice. She has taken an opportunity to move to another one of our branches where she will have plenty more opportunities to further her career skills.

However we do miss her a good deal and the team will still be in touch.

Alex has said should we ever be short on her day off she may like to come and visit for a days work.

We know as well our clients fell in love with her so please feel free to show your appreciation and support here.

Richard will be returning on Thursday to the clinic. We have a busy period coming, but we look forward to getting back to normal.

Please bare with us one more day 🙂

Thanks to the power of social media and a tremendous effort from the likes of Hilary Metcalfe and various other contacts and charity organisations. We found a place for our 3 baby kittens to go for long term fostering until they are ready for thier forever homes. Our head nurse Emily was sad to see them go as was the rest of the team, but it had provided a lovely experience by way of a confidence boost for Emily to take on the challenge next time, and it provided lots of smiles (and some tears 😭 this morning), as well as a lovely opportunity for our PCA Vicki to have a go at hand rearing 🙂. Vicki was too shy to allow herself to be photographed but she is a valuable member of the Wexham team. You may catch her answering the phones or covering Emily’s day off on a Monday, so feel free to say hello. 🙂. THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO SHARED THE POST AND HELPED TO FIND A SUITABLE FOSTERER 🙂. Thanks to the lovely Helen Cox at Catkins Cattery for taking them on! 🐈‍⬛🐈😻

Do you know how to spot blue-green algae?

Exposure to blue-green algae can cause long-term health problems in pets and can even be fatal. By drinking from or swimming in contaminated water, pets are at a high risk of becoming seriously ill.

Contact your vet immediately if you think your pet is at risk of blue-green algae poisoning. For more information of what to look out for and how to protect your pet, read our advice article here: https://bit.ly/3LqTmA4

Over the summer, our vets see a lot of dogs who have issues because of grass seeds. It is important to contact your vet immediately if you suspect your dog has an injury caused by a grass seed.

If walking your dog in long grass or woodland areas, we recommend checking your dog over and brushing away any grass seeds after the walk is done. Pay particular attention to paws, ears, eyes, and armpits.

To learn more about grass seeds, and our four simple steps for dealing with them, read our helpful advice article here: https://bit.ly/3zAdaOP

Do you have questions about neutering your cat? It's something we strongly advise as it has many benefits for them and helps to tackle the number of stray cats in the UK.

Female cats will benefit from reduced risk of unwanted pregnancy, certain health conditions and even certain types of cancer. For male cats, neutering reduces their urge to fight other males, lessening the chance of certain diseases, and it also means they are less likely to mark their territory around your home.
