A Little Insight Into My Life as a Dog Walker 🐾
Over the summer I’ve heard so many passing comments while out with the dogs things like “Wow, you’ve got your hands full!” or “That looks like hard work!” It always makes me smile, but after nearly 9 years in this job, I thought I’d give you a real glimpse into what life as a dog walker is actually like.
For those who don’t know me, I’m Katie 👋. I’ve been running my dog walking business for almost a decade, and it’s become such a huge part of who I am. I live with anxiety, and while that can make some parts of the job challenging, the dogs give me such purpose, calm, and joy every single day.
I’m not doing it alone either my lovely mum, Barbara (or as everyone knows her, Nanny Babs 🐕💖), helps me with the dogs and loves them just as fiercely as I do. She’s my rock, and the dogs adore her. At home, I’ve also got Bella (12) and Maisie (6) my children, and honestly the only children my heart could ever want. They are my world.
Now, back to the job itself… dog walking isn’t just throwing leads on and heading to the park:
✨ Safety, I'm constantly tuned in, risk-assessing every dog, person, and situation to keep everyone safe. It’s second nature now.
🚗 Driving & route planning, this job does involve a lot of time on the road, but careful planning of routes is essential. It’s not just about being efficient with time it reduces unnecessary driving for the environment, keeps the dogs’ days running smoothly, and helps me manage my own energy.
👣 Physically demanding, walking multiple groups daily is no small feat! I also live with scoliosis, which means I have to be really mindful about how I structure the day. Planning safe, sensible walks is key to keeping my back free of pain so I can carry on giving the dogs the adventures they deserve.
🌿 Lonely at times, it’s often just me, the dogs, and the countryside… though, honestly, they make the very best company.
And as summer fades, I’ll be honest I’m really excited to have my peaceful walking routes back without the “fair-weather walkers.” There’s nothing quite like the quiet paths, the sound of paws on the ground, and the feeling that this is exactly where I’m meant to be.
So yes...my hands are full, but so is my heart. 💛
