Dog walk hot weather awareness☀️🥵⚠️

How hot is too hot for a dog walk?

Each dog is different, for example Brachycephalic (flat faced), elderly or young, excitable dogs are more at risk of heat stroke, but the below shows a general rule of thumb in terms of care needed when walking your dog in hot weather.
In extreme weather such as we are experiencing at the moment is it not recommended.

Also remember that the floor they are walking on gets very hot! It can cause pain, discomfort and even cause burns!
If it is too hot for your hand, it’s to hot for their paws 🐾

‼️‼️Remember, your dog missing a walk or an event is not the end of the world, if it could save their life.‼️‼️

This includes routine appointments with us! If you feel that it is too hot for you to get here, please call us and we are more than happy to rearrange your appointment📞

What vaccinations do rabbits need?💉

Vaccinations are essential to protect your rabbits against the deadly diseases, Myxomatosis, RVHD1 and RVHD2.
These diseases are spread by contact with an infected rabbit or blood sucking insects, or via contaminated objects.
There are no effective treatments for these diseases, so prevention through vaccinations is essential. Your rabbits should receive annual jabs to protect them and other rabbits.

If you would like to book your bunny in for their vaccination, please contact us on 01795476411 or book online at our website😃

Rabbit dental care🦷

Dental problems can be a common issue in pet rabbits, this can happen when they have a diet that’s too low in fibre.
Common Rabbit dental problems include overgrown teeth, spurs, tooth root abscesses, and broken teeth.
Rabbits tend to hide pain, so unfortunately dental disease often goes unnoticed until it’s severe so it is very important to regularly check your rabbit’s teeth at home, and have them examined by your vet a few times a year.

The best way to prevent dental problems is to feed your rabbits a well-balanced diet which is high in fibre and good quality hay.

Symptoms of dental disease in rabbits include:
- Overgrown teeth
- A bumpy, painful jaw
- Weight loss
- Drooling
- Weepy eyes
- Teeth grinding
- A runny nose
- Reduced appetite
- A dirty back end, as grooming can become difficult and painful

Rabbits naturally try to hide pain so it’s important to check their teeth regularly!
If you suspect any problems, please contact us for an appointment❤️

Rabbit Awareness Week 24th - 28th June!

Rabbits are social creatures and should be kept in pairs or larger groups. Introducing adult rabbits can lead to potentially lethal fighting; don't be tempted to get one rabbit and add a friend later. Once two or more rabbits are bonded, they should remain together, including for vet trips. It is no longer recommended to keep rabbits and guinea pigs together as it is very difficult to meet both animals' needs.

Hot weather and pets🥵☀️

With the current high temperatures in the UK please remember to take extra precautions to keep your fur babies safe!

☀️ Please do not leave your dogs in hot cars, even for a short period of time!
They are unable to regulate their body temperature in the same way we do and this can cause serious health concerns.
☀️ During warm weather, pavements can get extremely hot and hurt paws! Remember, if it’s too hot for your hand, then it’s too hot for their paws.
☀️ Overweight pets, older pets, large breeds and brachycephalic breeds are at higher risk of heat stroke.
☀️ Don’t walk/exercise dogs during the peak of high temperatures.
☀️Make sure they have constant access to fresh water and cool/shaded areas.
☀️ Rabbits, guinea pigs and other small furies also need our help. They do not cope well with high temperatures, so steps should also be taken to ensure they are kept cool and comfortable. Provide fresh water and shade, you can also purchase small animal ice packs for cages to keep them cool, just make sure to cover them to prevent cold burns!
☀️ Know the possible signs of heat stroke:
- Excessive panting
- Drooling
- Difficult breathing
- Increased heart rate
- Seizures
- Weakness/ collapse

If you are at all concerned or suspect heat stroke, this is an emergency so please contact us as soon as possible!

If we are closed, then contact our out of hours service on 01622 734054.
