The ‘Protect Your Pets - Say No to Harmful Positive Lists’ petition is about the future of fishkeeping in the UK.

It responds to proposals that would introduce a ‘positive list’ system. This would limit which species can be legally kept, sold, or traded.

According to the Ornamental Aquatic Trade Association, this approach could:

• Reduce the number of species available to a very small list
• Exclude commonly kept fish due to lack of data, not risk
• Create new welfare challenges rather than solving them
• Increase pressure on responsible fishkeepers and aquatic businesses

Fancy goldfish are fishes that inhabit a world of contrasts. At one extreme, they’re a novelty widely considered as pets for children and we seem to spend much of our time pointing out to parents just how unsuitable they are for small tanks. At the other end of the scale (pardon the pun) they’re prized examples of many generations of selection by dedicated breeders. These Calico ranchu were big, impressive fish for serious keepers that appreciate their charms and have the facilities to do them justice. Recently seen at our Wenvoe store.

Just one of our stunning variety’s of crystal shrimp!!

Having appeared relatively recently in our aquaria, fancy shrimps are continuing their ascent as the perfect choice for small set ups. A line bred form of the Crystal shrimp (Caridina cantonensis) these Pinto spotted shrimp have the same requirements, which are easily provided and now widely catered for by a wide range of products. Some of these forms can be tricky to breed true and mixing them is sure to result in offspring that lose their pedigree features. These were amongst a wide range of shrimps at our Shrewsbury store.

A new proposal being discussed in the UK could significantly change the future of fishkeeping.

This proposal centres on a ‘positive list’ system, in which only a limited number of approved species would be allowed to be kept, sold, or traded. While the intention is to improve animal welfare, there are growing concerns within the industry about the potential unintended consequences.

Industry experts, including the Ornamental Aquatic Trade Association (OATA), warn that this approach could:

• Restrict fishkeeping to a very small number of species
• Exclude many commonly kept fish simply due to a lack of available data, rather than any proven risk
• Create more welfare issues, rather than solving them

At present, there is no clear evidence that a positive list system would improve animal welfare outcomes.
