There have been a few new followers recently so I thought I should introduce myself!

Hi, I’m Annabelle, a dog trainer working in Shrewsbury, Shropshire. I am a certified dog trainer with The Institute of Modern Dog Trainers and am a qualified man/pet trailing instructor with The Canine School of Trailing. All my methods are positive and ethical.

I also do some dog walking - all solo, 121 walks, or dogs from the same household - and this mainly suits dogs who need a bit more individual attention because they may be unsure of other dogs and/or the environment or they may well just enjoy it a bit more!

I teach man and pet trailing too. This is where a dog finds a ‘lost’ person or dog using just their nose. It’s amazing for dogs who need that extra bit of mental enrichment, dogs who are a bit anxious or dogs who need a lower impact exercise. It suits pretty much all dogs and beginners are always welcome!

I love dogs and spend most of my time with them. I have two of my own, both rescues, and both teaching me different things every single day. My favourite thing to do is spend time with them - though if I’m not with dogs, you’ll usually see me dancing or singing musical theatre, which I also love ❤️

Figuring things out with your dog is part of trailing - understanding how to navigate those junctions and interpreting body language is so important. It’s also a great way to learn and build confidence too!

Tia has been trailing a while now, so is working out extra difficulties and wider areas, where the scent can travel. She’s 11, and only started trailing last year! One of our superb golden oldies!

Trailing is perfect for seniors as it gives dogs the mental enrichment, whilst keeping the exercise low impact (and this can always be adapted to a dog’s needs).

Come and find a ‘lost’ person or dog using just their nose!

We still have one space left on sessions next week, so message to book - or book on the link in the comments.

So happy to be back with this one after a couple of weeks off sick! Missed this beautiful, smiley face 💓💓

What do I (the human end of the lead) get out of trailing?

We often talk about the benefits of trailing for dogs - and there are many! - but we talk less about the benefits for humans.

I started trailing a few years ago with Dobby. I love finding things to do with Dobby and, after doing our Good Citizens awards and some agility, I wanted to find something lower impact where we could spend time together. And we have spent a lot of time trailing together now!

Through trailing, I have met some incredible people, some of whom are now very close friends. When I found out about Dobby’s chronic bronchitis and arthritis issues and when I adopted Bridget, these people were so understanding and compassionate and I am so grateful for that. Trailing has brought me a community.

I think trailing has helped me bond more with Dobby. We were already pretty close and I learn so much about him through trailing, and it’s helped me feel more confident in reading his body language and noticing the subtle signs that pointed to pain. I am glad I can give him something back when he gives me so much 🐶

I have loved going through the assessments - though at times it has been stressful and anxiety-provoking! There’s nothing like pushing yourself and completing a challenge, and having a certificate and rosette helps too! As Dobby is getting older, I’m so glad I have ways we can keep achieving together - I can do something fun and enriching, and if isn’t just for young dogs!

I have also become a trailing instructor. Trailing is something I believe in. Yes, I post about trails and booking links but for me, seeing that sense of achievement on the handler’s face when the dog finds their lost person, seeing dogs become more confident when they have been nervous, a handler turning to me and saying ‘that was so much fun!’ Has meant the world!

I could probably carry on but I wanted to share what I love about trailing. I’m sure many of you have had similar experiences and I hope to be able to bring more of you these experiences. What do YOU love about trailing?

We had a lovely early morning trailing session before the heat hits! We adapted by choosing an earlier session for our trailing 🙂

The dogs did amazing!

Team Jasper did their second session. This boy is a complete powerhouse and completes his trails in record time. He’s super enthusiastic and managed really well with lots of distractions.

Team Tia learnt how to do multidirectional starts and navigated really well. She was super confident and it was lovely to see the team working things out together with me stepping back so they can be more independent.

Team Billy had some motivational trails and he did excellent. It’s lovely watching Billy and his owner work together to figure things out. Billy is able to express himself with his owner understanding what he’s telling her. It’s lovely to see.

Well done and stay cool today 😎
