🎉 Congratulations to our incredible nurse Jo 🎉

We’re bursting with pride as Jo officially completes her Level 5 Advanced Diploma in Canine Behavioural Management, a testament to her dedication, compassion, and curiosity.

Jo’s journey into behaviour began with Luna, a poorly puppy rescued from the RSPCA. Once nursed back to health, Luna made it clear she wasn’t going anywhere, and the bond was sealed. But Luna also showed signs of resource guarding, and Jo made it her mission to understand why dogs behave the way they do, and how we can help them feel safe, confident, and understood.

That mission grew into a passion: helping dogs thrive emotionally and socially, and giving owners the tools to shape confident, well-rounded companions. Today, Jo’s work is backed by an ABTC-recognised qualification, meaning she meets the highest standards set by the Animal Behaviour and Training Council.

💡 So what does a canine behaviourist do?

Unlike a dog trainer who focuses on teaching specific cues or obedience, a behaviourist works with the emotional state behind the behaviour, addressing issues like anxiety, aggression, reactivity, or fear. Jo offers behavioural house visits through Abbey Vets, where she assesses the dog in their home environment and creates tailored plans to support long-term wellbeing.

Her goal? To help owners understand how their dogs communicate, and to guide them in reshaping behaviour through empathy, science, and trust.

🐾 If you’ve ever felt unsure about your dog’s behaviour, or want to help them feel happier and more secure, Jo’s here to help.

Please join us in congratulating Jo for her hard work, heart, and unwavering commitment to pets and their people. 💜

🌈 Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day🌈

Yesterday marked a day of quiet reflection for many of us, Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day. A moment to honour the beloved pets who’ve crossed over, leaving pawprints on our hearts that time can never erase.

Saying goodbye is never easy. Whether it was yesterday or years ago, the ache of missing a cherished companion can resurface in unexpected ways. These animals aren’t “just pets” they are family, confidants, healers, and sources of unconditional love.

At our clinic, we understand the depth of that bond. We’ve walked alongside many of you through the hardest goodbyes, and we want you to know, you’re not alone. If you're struggling to come to terms with the loss of a furry family member, our team is here. To listen, to support, and to hold space for your grief.

Let’s keep their memories alive, in stories, in photos, in the way we love the animals still with us. Because love like that never truly leaves.

💛

🐾 A big thank you to Dobby and her wonderful human 🐾

We’re absolutely glowing after reading this beautiful review, it truly lifted our spirits and reminded us why we do what we do. Your kind words mean the world to our team, and knowing that our care is felt and appreciated is the greatest reward of all.

“Our visit to Abbey Vets practice was such a positive one! All staff were so warm and welcoming, all taking the time to chat to me and Dobby (my little sausage dog). Every member of staff was very knowledgeable and went above and beyond to give help and advice. I’ve visited a few vets over the years, in and around Shrewsbury and this practice stands out as being by far the best! I think Dobby will be excited to be going back for future visits, she got lots of fuss and treats!"

Dobby, you are an absolute delight, and we’re thrilled to hear you enjoyed your visit (and the treats!). We can’t wait to welcome you back with more fuss, tail wags, and smiles.

💜 Thank you again for taking the time to share your experience. It means more than you know.

🐾 Puppy Check Superstar Alert🐾

We had the absolute pleasure of meeting Mabel, the tiniest spaniel with the biggest personality! She came in for her puppy check with our nurse Jo and instantly stole the show (and nurse Jo’s heart 💕).

From the moment she trotted through the door, Mabel was all waggy tails, cuddles, and confidence. She took everything in her stride, brave as can be and clever as a button. With a belly full of biscuits and a head full of curiosity, she made sure every moment was tail-waggingly joyful.

We’re already smitten and can’t wait to watch this little lady grow into her paws. Mabel—you’re going to be amazing! 🐶✨

🐾 International Dog Day🐾

Every day is Dog Day around here 💜

But hey, we’ll take any excuse to shout about how much we adore our four-legged legends.

From the scruffy couch hogs to the sleek agility stars, the wise old souls to the chaotic puppy moments.

Dogs bring heart, humour, and healing to our lives in ways no other creature can. They teach us patience, loyalty, and how to celebrate the small things (like a perfectly executed zoomie or a tail wag that could power a wind turbine).

🎉 Today, we celebrate:
- The brave patients who bounce back from surgery with tail wags and kisses
- The gentle therapy dogs who soothe anxious hearts
- The working dogs who sniff, guide, guard, and serve
- The goofy companions who remind us not to take life too seriously

💬 Got a dog who changed your life? Drop a photo or a story below — we’d love to meet your canine hero.

And to all the dogs we’ve had the honour of caring for: thank you for trusting us with your health, your quirks, and your slobbery kisses. You make our work meaningful, messy, and magical.

🐶 Here’s to the dogs. Today and every day.

🐾 Moose Update 🐾

Some of you might remember Moose, the beautiful American bulldog who stole our hearts (and our cuddle quota) when he came in for his castration a little while ago. Back then, he was recovering like a champ, with round-the-clock snuggles from the team.

Well… Moose is back! He popped in for his final post-op check, and we’re thrilled to report he’s healing beautifully and has now been officially signed off. 🎉

Of course, true to form, Moose made sure to collect his customary cuddles and biscuits before heading off. It’s been an absolute pleasure looking after this gentle soul, his waggy tail and soft eyes have left pawprints on all of us.

🐾 What Is Your Cat Trying to Tell You?🐾

If you’ve ever wondered what your feline friend is saying without words, Catniss, our vet Zoe’s gorgeous girl is here to demonstrate some classic cat body language in style 💁‍♀️🐱

📸 Swipe through the pictures to see Catniss in action!

✨ The Big Stretch

When your cat stretches out luxuriously in front of you, it’s not just yoga, it’s trust. Cats are most vulnerable when they’re relaxed, so this is a sign they feel safe and comfortable in your presence. It’s also a subtle invitation for attention… or admiration. Catniss is a master of the elegant stretch!

✨ The Belly Reveal

A cat showing you her belly isn’t always asking for a rub, but it is a huge compliment. That soft tummy is prime territory, and exposing it means your cat feels secure and unthreatened. Catniss loves to lounge belly-up in the sun, radiating confidence and calm.

✨ The Head Bump (aka Bunting)

This one’s pure love. When your cat gently bumps her head against you, she’s marking you with her scent and saying, “You’re mine.” It’s a bonding gesture, full of affection and familiarity. Catniss is especially fond of head bumps when Zoe’s had a long day—she knows just how to lift spirits.

💬 Got a cat who does these things too? Share a pic or story in the comments, we’d love to celebrate your feline’s unique way of saying “I love you.”

🌿🐾 Sniffari Adventures: Why Your Dog’s Nose Needs a Walk Too!🐾🌿

Ever heard of a sniffari? It’s not just a cute word, it’s a game-changer for your dog’s wellbeing.

A sniff walk is all about letting your dog lead the way with their nose. Instead of marching briskly around the block, we slow down and let them explore the world one scent at a time. To us, it might look like dawdling… but to them, it’s detective work, memory games, and mindfulness all rolled into one.

👃 Why sniffing matters:
- Dogs experience the world primarily through scent. Every lamppost, leaf pile, and breeze carries stories they’re wired to decode.
- Sniffing activates their brain in ways that physical exercise alone can’t. It’s like a crossword puzzle for their senses!
- Mental enrichment through sniffing can reduce anxiety, improve sleep, and even help with behavioural challenges.

💤 Tired dog = happy dog:
You might be surprised to learn that a 20-minute sniffari can leave your dog more satisfied (and snoozy!) than a full-speed jog. That’s because mental stimulation is deeply tiring, in the best way.

🐶 So next time you head out, try this:
- Loosen the lead and let your dog choose the route.
- Pause often. Let them linger.
- Celebrate the sniffs—they’re doing important work!

Your dog’s nose is a superpower. Let’s give it the time and space to shine. 🌟

Have you tried a sniffari with your dog? Share your favourite sniff spots or photos below, we’d love to see your pups in action! 📸👇

🎵 Classical FM, comfy blankets, and a very sleepy Coco.🐾

Meet Coco — our gorgeous little patient who’s been spending some extra time with us recently while we help her manage her diabetes. 💉❤️

Diabetes in dogs, just like in humans, affects how the body regulates blood sugar. Normally, insulin helps move glucose from the bloodstream into cells where it’s used for energy. But in diabetic patients, this process doesn’t work properly, meaning glucose builds up in the blood while the cells go hungry.

To keep Coco safe and well, we perform regular glucose curves, a series of blood sugar readings taken throughout the day to help us understand how her body is responding to insulin. These curves guide us in tailoring her treatment and keeping her levels in a healthy range.

Recently, Coco’s diabetes became a little unstable, which can happen from time to time. She wasn’t feeling herself, and her blood sugar levels were bouncing around more than we’d like. So we stepped in with IV fluids and closer monitoring to support her body and get things back on track.

We’re so pleased to say that Coco is now feeling much better, her symptoms have improved, her glucose levels are settling, and she’s back to her usual sweet self. 💕

Today she’s snoozing peacefully in the dog ward, wrapped up in comfort and listening to soothing classical music. It’s safe to say she’s enjoying her recovery in style!

🫎🐾 Moose Watch: Activated 🐾🫎

Today we had the absolute pleasure of welcoming Moose, the ever-so-handsome American Bulldog with a heart as soft as his ears 💜. Moose came in for his castration procedure, but quickly decided the kennel life wasn’t for him—so he made himself right at home in our prep room instead. A true gentleman knows his comforts!

With his gentle nature and soulful eyes, Moose won over the entire team in minutes. He was a little nervous, so we set up full Moose Watch, a cuddle and reassurance rota that somehow grew by the hour. Even our lovely receptionist Jo (who’s famously partial to a bull breed!) couldn’t resist popping in for a snuggle.

Moose is now back home with his hoomans, soaking up all the love and post-op pampering he deserves. Well done, Moose you were an absolute joy to care for today. 💜
