No change in the guidance for dog grooming until at least the 29th March.

22/02/2021

Further to the government announcement today, at present dog groomers should remain closed and open with other non essential shops on the 12th April (all going well). I am waiting for clarification from Defra/CFSG if guidelines for groomers will change at all between now and 12th April.

At present grooming parlours should be closed. Groomers are not allowed to groom a dog unless it is excessively matted and their welfare is suffering. We are not allowed to groom dogs with a couple of matts, or to stop a dog developing matts. We are allowed to clip nails if they are growing round and are in danger of embedding in the pads. We can bath dogs only if the dog has a veterinary diagnosed skin condition and has a prescribed medicated shampoo to use. Any groomers booking appointments and grooming dogs in a salon setting other than this are breaking the rules and opening themselves up to receiving a £1000 fine, the clients who took their dog can also be subject to a fine of up to £1000.

I love my job, and the dogs I groom, but I have also experienced the devastating loss of my mum, who I was not allowed to visit in hospital to say goodbye, I could not even attend her funeral. I have still been unable to visit my dad since my mums death. I would not want to risk putting anyone else in this position.

If your dog is matted, and I can take photos to prove this, and their health is suffering, contact me for an appointment. I do not want any dogs to suffer. If your dog has a couple of matts, but is moving freely, they do not qualify under present government guidelines for a groom.

As soon as I get any updates as to any changes in these guidelines and rules I will post these and keep you informed.

I have been made aware of other groomers who are bending the rules. I’m sorry but I do not feel comfortable doing this.

Stricter guidelines have been introduced. Groomers guidelines have changed as many have been opening doing grooms when they should not.

The new guidelines are

Groomers may accept a dog to be groomed by appointment where this is necessary for the animal’s welfare and not simply for aesthetic reasons. Welfare reasons could
include on veterinary advice for a skin condition or excessive matting causing the dog discomfort.

So Peppy Paws will remain closed and only groom for welfare reasons as instructed by the government.

If your dog has been to the vets and the vet has advised grooming, your dog is matted, or your dog has a skin condition which has been seen by a vet, call me and I can give you an appointment.

I am sorry if you are frustrated as other groomers are open and grooming as per normal and I am not. I am not bending the rules and going against government guidance and risking both me and the client a hefty fine of £1000

I am grateful to all my clients who are sticking by me and waiting for me to reopen. I very much appreciate it. I am missing seeing all the lovely dogs I groom and can’t wait to see everyone again. Hopefully if people stick to the rules this will be sooner rather than later.

If you need any advice or have concerns about your furbaby please do not hesitate to call me.

Thank you and stay safe

Due to the latest announcement Peppy Paws will be closed for standard grooms.

Durham County Council have advised me that dog groomers can only open for emergency or immediate welfare concerns. There is some debate amongst groomers what constitutes a welfare groom, but from my conversations it is the following.

Dogs can only be seen by a groomer for welfare grooms, not aesthetic grooms. Therefore we can shave down matted dogs, we can trim hair over a dogs eyes, we can clip nails that are long and overgrown, we can trim hair between pads, and trim around the bottom. We can not do a standard groom - bathing the dog and trimming it to your chosen style.

There are fines for breaching these rules which apply to me as the business that allowed a breach in the rules for grooming a dog when there was no immediate welfare need, and for you the customer who came to a business that is not essential. These fines I have been advised would be £1000 for me and a £1000 for you.

All standard grooms booked in are therefore cancelled.

If your dog is matting, please contact me and I can advise on the best course of action.

If you have a breed that’s eyes are becoming covered by hair, or whose hygiene areas are getting dirty, call me and I can organise a quick trim of those areas.

Baths are not allowed unless you have a medicated shampoo and have been advised by a vet that a dog has to be bathed regularly in this specialist shampoo because of skin health issues.

There may be changes to these guidelines and I will keep you updated.

If you need advice please just give me a call. I am happy to help, and can do video calls on WhatsApp or messenger. My number is 07500 734039

To all my customers stay safe, keep washing those hands, brush your dogs, and look after yourself.

Thank you all for your continued support over this extraordinary time.

Following the announcement about a second lockdown I have been waiting for confirmation on if dog groomers have to close. Durham County Council are 99.9% sure that we have to as a non essential business, so tomorrow I will be closing Peppy Paws doors until 2nd December. I have already started to contact customers scheduled in to rearrange their appointments and will contact the rest by the end of the week.

I will miss all my lovely furry clients, and owners. I hope you all stay safe and well. Hoping this lockdown will mean a better Christmas for everyone and that you can all spend time with your families.

Take care and see you on the flip side!

I am selling my grooming table if anyone would be interested. It is an Aeolos Electric Low-Low grooming table. It is a lovely table I have used for five years now and works really well. It does have some paint chipping on the frame but that does not affect its use. It lowers to 27cm to allow dogs to easily walk or jump on, saving you having to lift them, and lifts to 92cm. You can use it at any height in between that. Suitable for large dogs being 126cm long and 65cm wide and able to support up to 150kg in weight.

Price £100

Collection only and you will need a large estate or van to move it.
