🛑 Important Autumn Alert for Horse Owners 🐴

This year there has been a surge in acorn poisoning cases, linked to an unusually heavy fall of acorns in woodlands and paddocks. With more acorns than usual littering fields, the risk of ingestion is significantly increased.

⚠️ Why the risk is higher this year
• It’s a mast year, meaning oaks are producing huge quantities of acorns - more than usual.
• Horses grazing near oak trees or under their canopy are MORE likely to pick up acorns.
• Even a small number of acorns (especially young/green ones) can be harmful due to high tannin content.

🩺 Warning signs to watch for
• Colic, belly pain, restlessness
• Diarrhoea (sometimes with blood) or constipation
• Loss of appetite, depression, lethargy
• Dark or reduced urine, signs of dehydration

If you spot any of these symptoms, contact us on 01306 627706

✅ How to protect your horses
• Keep horses away from oak‐rich paddocks
• Regularly rake/clear acorns, especially in high-drop zones
• Provide plentiful high-quality forage, so horses aren’t tempted
• Use electric fencing or exclusion methods around oak trees
• Monitor especially after high winds or heavy drop periods
