Two Puppies, Two Very Different Personalities 🐾❤️

Today I had these two gorgeous puppies in for their grooming session, Buddy and Benji and they couldn’t be more different! 😂

One is the definition of chilled — happy to take everything in their stride and just enjoy the experience. And just falls asleep when brushing his face 😝🥰

And then we have the other one… well, let’s just say he brings a LOT of personality to the table! 😂🐶 A little bit crazy, a little bit excitable, and definitely keeping me on my toes!

But what makes me so proud is the massive improvement they are making. ❤️ Every visit, they are learning, building confidence and understanding that grooming doesn’t have to be scary.

It’s so important to remember that every puppy is different. We don’t expect them all to behave the same way, and we certainly don’t rush them into being something they’re not.

We work at their pace, build that trust and celebrate the little wins — because those little wins eventually become HUGE progress. 🐾✨

I’m so proud of both of these little ones and I can’t wait to see how far they continue to come! ❤️

Meet Peter 🐾❤️

This is Peter, and what a chilled-out little gentleman he is! 😍

Peter comes all the way from London to see me whenever his caregivers come down to Kent for a holiday — and I absolutely love that they choose to bring him along for his groom. 🥰

He is such a relaxed, happy boy and makes my job an absolute pleasure. He takes everything in his stride and is always so calm and trusting throughout his groom.

It really means so much to me when caregivers travel such a long way because they trust me with their dogs. ❤️ and I get to have some extra cuddle time 🥰

🐾🐾POSITIVE TRAINING DOESN’T MEAN NO BOUNDARIES — ESPECIALLY IN GROOMING 🐾🐾

There’s something I feel very strongly about when it comes to working with dogs.

Positive training does NOT mean allowing a dog to do whatever they want.

Dogs need boundaries. They need guidance. They need to understand what is expected of them and, just as importantly, what isn’t acceptable.

And this is especially important when it comes to dog grooming.

When a dog comes into my salon, I’m not just there to make them look pretty. I’m working with a living, breathing animal who may be nervous, worried, overwhelmed or simply unsure about what is happening.

My job is to teach them that grooming can be a safe and positive experience.

But that doesn’t mean I let a dog bite, constantly jump off the table, pull away from equipment or put themselves in danger.

There has to be a boundary.

The difference is how we teach that boundary.

I will never use fear, pain or intimidation to force a dog into compliance.

Instead, I use patience, communication, redirection, positive reinforcement and consistency.

If a dog doesn’t want their feet touched, we work on it.

If they’re worried about the dryer, we introduce it gradually.

If they’re struggling on the grooming table, we slow things down and help them understand what we’re asking.

If they try to bite because they’re frightened, I don’t simply punish them for communicating. I look at why they’re struggling and work out how we can make the situation safer for everyone.

But at the same time, I will teach them that certain behaviours aren’t acceptable.

Positive doesn’t mean permissive.

Kind doesn’t mean having no boundaries.

Listening to a dog doesn’t mean letting them make every decision.

There is a very important line between working WITH a dog and allowing unsafe behaviour, and that is a line I will never cross.

Grooming should be about cooperation, trust and communication.

I want a dog to learn that I will listen when they’re struggling — but I also want them to learn that I will calmly guide them through things they need to learn.

Because sometimes the kindest thing we can do is give a dog a clear boundary and help them understand it.

My goal isn’t to have a dog that behaves because they’re scared of what I’ll do if they get it wrong.

My goal is to have a dog that learns:

“I can trust this person. They will listen to me, but they will also guide me.” ❤️🐶

That, to me, is positive grooming.

Not force.

Not fear.

Sometimes, clipping a dog short isn’t a style choice—it’s the kindest and most humane option.

These lovely dog came to me with severe matting. Mats don’t just sit on top of the coat; they pull tightly on the skin, causing constant discomfort and, in some cases, bruising, sores, restricted movement, and hidden skin problems.

As groomers, our priority will always be the dog’s welfare. Dematting a severely matted coat is painful and unfair, so the kindest thing to do is remove the coat and give the dog a fresh start.

Please remember that matting can happen to any owner. Life gets busy, dogs don’t always enjoy being brushed, and some coats tangle incredibly quickly. There’s absolutely no judgement here—only support. 💙

Now that these gorgeous puppies are comfortable again, we can work together on a regular grooming schedule and home brushing routine to keep their coat healthy, comfortable, and mat-free.

Yes it took me hours but they had lots of breaks to make sure they are happy and having some down time

A short clip grows back. Comfort and welfare always come first. 🐾💙

This is the lovely Daisy, and she did so well today during her first hand strip with me. ❤️

Daisy is a rescue, and her caregivers have done an incredible job working with her over the years. Their patience, love, and dedication really show, and it was such a pleasure to be part of her journey.

She took everything in her stride, and I’m so proud of how well she did. Building a bond of trust between dog and groomer is so important, especially for dogs who may have had a difficult start in life. Every groom is done at their pace, making sure they feel safe, listened to, and supported throughout.

Daisy left feeling much more comfortable, looking fantastic, and I can’t wait to see her again for her next groom. Well done, gorgeous girl! 💕🐶

This is Lilly, and I absolutely adore her. 🩷

Lilly was originally meant to start with one of my puppy packages, but instead our first meeting turned into an emergency bath after she decided rolling in fox poo was a great idea! 🤦‍♀️💩

Now she comes in regularly for her bath and blow dry to keep her coat fresh, healthy, and feeling its best.

As always, I let Lilly tell me what she’s comfortable with. Every dog is different, and it’s so important that they have a choice throughout the grooming process. Today, Lilly chose to hop up onto the grooming table all by herself and settled down to relax. She did need a few little breaks to play with some toys along the way, and that’s absolutely fine. Those breaks help keep grooming a positive experience and build confidence with every visit.

Watching dogs like Lilly grow in confidence and trust is one of the most rewarding parts of my job. 💕🐾

This is Mr Q! 💙

He’d been waiting a little while for his appointment with me, so today was our very first groom together.

He was an absolute superstar! The only thing he wasn’t too keen on was getting up onto the grooming table, and that’s completely okay. Knowing he has a little arthritis, I adapted the groom to suit him. I blow-dried and deshed him while he stayed comfortably on the floor, where he felt much more relaxed.

It’s so important to work with the dog in front of you, rather than expecting every dog to fit the same routine. By listening to what Mr Q was telling me, we made his first groom a positive experience.

He left looking and smelling amazing… even if he did eat me out of house and home with all the treats! 😂🐾

Molly came in for her groom today and is usually an absolute superstar, but today she just wasn’t feeling it—and that’s completely okay. We all have off days, and our dogs are no different.

Instead of pushing on, we gave Molly some time to relax, have a breather, and decompress before we started again.

It’s so important to listen to what a dog is telling us. When a dog is feeling overwhelmed, forcing them through a groom or rushing them isn’t fair and only risks damaging the trust we’ve worked so hard to build.

Yes, it meant I had to reschedule another client ( Sorry Purdey Maison 🥴) because Molly needed a little extra time, but her welfare always comes first. A positive, stress-free experience is far more important than sticking rigidly to the schedule.

At Emspawpals, every dog is treated as an individual. Their emotional wellbeing is just as important as their groom, and sometimes the kindest thing we can do is simply slow down and listen. 💙🐾

Lovely coco having a bit of fun before a groom,
Playing with a dog before a groom makes a big difference especially for puppies or nervous dogs, it helps them feel calmer and releases a feel good hormone making the grooming environment a fun and positive experience for the dog, it strengthens the dogs bond with the groomer and makes the dog feel more relaxed 🥰🐾
