๐Ÿพ Historic Moment as Scotland Outlaws Greyhound Racing ๐Ÿพ

Scotland has taken a major step forward for animal welfare, voting to ban greyhound racing in a historic decision that marks a turning point for the protection of dogs.

On 18 March, the Scottish Parliament passed the Greyhound Racing (Offences) (Scotland) Bill, introduced by Mark Ruskell MSP, with 70 votes in favour, 27 against, and 19 abstentions. This landmark decision places Scotland among a growing number of countries choosing to end greyhound racing.

This progress follows closely behind similar legislation in Wales, reflecting a wider shift across the UK towards stronger animal welfare protections.

The ban has been shaped by years of dedicated advocacy from the Unbound the Greyhound coalition, a group of nine animal welfare organisations working together to end greyhound racing in Scotland. Their campaign included political engagement, public mobilisation, and evidence-based advocacy, including a widely supported open letter to the Scottish Government signed by more than 22,000 people.

Greyhound racing has long raised serious welfare concerns, including injuries, overbreeding, and poor outcomes for dogs during and after their racing careers. This new legislation reflects growing public awareness and a clear commitment to prioritising animal welfare based on evidence.

Campaigners have welcomed the vote as a decisive step forward, recognising greyhounds as companion animals rather than commodities. It also sends a powerful message beyond Scotland, strengthening calls for wider reform.

We would like to extend congratulations to Mark Ruskell MSP and everyone involved in the Unbound the Greyhound coalition, alongside organisations including OneKind, GREY2K USA Worldwide, APDAWG, and many grassroots groups who helped drive this change. We are proud to have played a small part in this important movement for animals ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ•

A founding member of the Association of Dog Boarders, Vicky has previous experience working with stakeholders and influencers of The Animal Welfare (Licensing of Activities Involving Animals) (England) Regulations 2018.

Representing Home Boarders in the 2019/2020 guidance review meetings with DEFRA and CFSG, she outlined reasonable changes from the perspective of both Home Boarders and the dog owners using the services. Many of the proposals were adopted in the February 2022 update.

Previously, Vicky worked in the pharmaceutical industry for 17 years, leading government licence inspections and producing high quality compliance documentation such as procedures and work instructions. Her speciality in logistics and transportation led to managing third party contracts and relationships with manufacturers, warehouses and transport providers from a quality and performance perspective, including issue management.
