Keeping Dogs Cool in a Heatwave (Wilma-approved tips!)
With temperatures rising across the UK, it’s really important we help our dogs stay safe, cool and comfortable in the heat. Dogs can overheat quickly, especially during exercise or in direct sun, so a few small changes can make a big difference.
Fresh water everywhere
Make sure your dog always has access to cool, clean water. Add a few ice cubes to keep it colder for longer, and refresh bowls more often than usual. If you’re out, always take water with you.
Shade is non-negotiable
Whether in the garden or on walks, always make sure there’s proper shade available. Trees, umbrellas, or even a shaded corner of the house all help dogs regulate their temperature.
Walk at the right time
Avoid walking during the hottest part of the day (usually 11am–5pm). Early mornings or later evenings are much safer and more comfortable for your dog.
Cooling down at home
Wet towels on the floor
Fans moving air around the room
Frozen treats or lick mats
A paddling pool if your dog enjoys water
Even lying on cool tiles indoors can help them regulate their temperature.
Watch the ground
If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for paws. Pavements can burn quickly in strong sun, so always check before heading out.
Spotting heat stress
Look out for heavy panting, drooling, tiredness, vomiting, or wobbliness. If you notice any of these, move them to a cool place immediately and contact a vet.
