How will a sniff walk help my reactive dog?
Letting a reactive dog sniff during walks might sound counterintuitive (since you may want to “keep moving” and avoid triggers), but in most cases it actually helps regulate their behavior rather than worsen it.
Here’s why it’s beneficial:
1. Sniffing lowers stress and arousal
Sniffing is naturally calming for dogs. It activates parts of their brain associated with exploration rather than threat detection. For a reactive dog who is often on high alert this can bring their overall arousal level down, making outbursts less likely.
2. It shifts focus away from triggers
A dog that’s scanning the environment visually is more likely to fixate on other dogs, people, or noises. Sniffing redirects attention to the ground and scent trails, which reduces visual hypervigilance and gives you a buffer before they react.
3. It provides mental enrichment (which tires them out)
Sniffing is cognitively demanding. A short “sniff walk” can be more mentally exhausting than a longer, structured walk. A mentally satisfied dog is generally less reactive because they’re not carrying excess, unspent energy.
I know it might be annoying walking slowly watching your dog sniff, but the difference this simple technique has made with Marvin speaks for itself.
He would previously lunge at anyone or anything approaching (humans, bikes, scooters, dogs etc)
We’re now in a place where humans, bikes and scooters can pass with ease.
He’s still slightly reactive where dogs are concerned but we’ve only been using this method 2 weeks and I’m sure with time he will become the perfect gentleman 🥰
