Holnest Park Equine Vets has used Proteq Flu and Proteq Flu-Te as the vaccine of choice since 2011. This vaccine is the only UK licensed Flu vaccine that contains both clades of virus recommended by the OIE (World Animal Health organisation) including the Florida Clade 1 strain currently circulating in the UK in this outbreak. Clients can therfore rest assured that their vaccinated horses are protected. The immunity is strongest if the horse has received a vaccination in the last 6 months.

Is Herpes Virus sweeping the country? No!!! The Animal Health Trust (AHT) has assisted with 6 outbreaks of EHV-1 since November 2012 in Devon, Somerset, East Anglia and Gloucestershire. All six have caused neurological signs in the affected horses. This is an unusual number of outbreaks to diagnose in such a short period of time – in previous years the AHT would have been surprised to have seen this many cases in a year.
The AHT regularly sees peaks and troughs of disease occurrence, and at certain periods experiences more cases of a certain disease than at other times. Unfortunately there is no clear scientific explanation for this.
Outbreaks of EHV-1 causing neurological signs are usually swiftly eliminated and as of today (Wednesday 03 April 13) the AHT has not diagnosed any fresh cases of EHV-1 causing neurological signs since 16 March. Furthermore there have been no further diagnosis of EHV-1 relating to possible contact with neurological cases since 21 March.
The affected yards in Gloucestershire remain closed until all horses are cleared thereby enabling eveyone else to continue competing.
For information on how to protect your horse from infectious diseases at competions please see the excellent articlehttp://www.aht.org.uk/skins/Default/pdfs/AHTs_sensible_and_simple_biosecurity_steps_for_horse_owners_and_competitors_attending_equine_events.pdf
