Tineola bisselliella, commonly known as the common clothes moth or webbing clothes moth, is a significant household pest that can cause damage to natural fibres. Here's what you should know about it:

Key Characteristics:

Small Moth: Adults are small, with a wingspan of about 9-16 mm. They are typically a uniform bronze or golden colour with a reddish-gold tuft of hair on their head. Unlike some other moths, they don't usually have spots on their wings.

Webbing Larvae: The larvae are creamy-white caterpillars with a brown head capsule, reaching up to 1/2 inch (13 mm) in length. They are called "webbing" clothes moths because they spin silken threads and feeding tunnels or patches of webbing on the materials they infest.

Feeds on Keratin: The larvae feed on keratin, a protein found in animal fibres such as wool, fur, silk, feathers, felt, and leather. They can also damage synthetic blends if they are soiled with food particles, bodily odours, or blended with wool.

Prefers Dark and Undisturbed Areas: Adult moths avoid light and are often seen running or scuttling rather than flying. Larvae also prefer dark, hidden areas like closets, under furniture, and in folds of fabric.
