**GUINEA PIGS AS CHILDRENS PETS**
I have to share my experience and opinion on the all too familiar “ we want to get our child/children a pet so that they learn some responsibility” then message me a few months later asking to return said Animals telling me that their child/children aren’t looking after them as promised and have lost interest.
Please let me start by saying a child is never responsible for a living breathing animal. Period. YOU ARE AS AN ADULT.
Let me also add that your child’s first experience with a pet is YOUR responsibility to make sure this is a positive and engaging experience for the whole family.
Children learn from example and if you are not interested in the well being and needs of your pet and think it’s okay to pass this over to your children - because they “really wanted them” “ promised to look after them”- then it’s unlikely your child will be!
As an adult it is your job to ensure you teach your child how important and inclusive a family pet is for the duration of its lifetime.
It was as a young child and the positive and happy experiences I shared with my family in keeping rabbits, hamsters, cats and eventually dogs that are my happiest family memories.
If you take on a pet for your child as their responsibility then rehome them when they lose interest - all you are instilling in your child is a sense of failure and loss and that IT IS FINE TO REHOME ANIMALS WHEN WE CANNOT BE BOTHERED WITH THEM ANYMORE!!! That animals are disposable and insignificant.
The lesson you want to teach your child/children is so misguided - if you want your children to have pets then they are YOUR pets and you are showing your child/children how to look after them ALONGSIDE YOU and this is something that you can spend your time together doing - because it’s important!
We don’t rehome them when their housing no longer gets priority in your house or garden or the shavings and hay make a mess.
PEOPLE PLEASE THINK BEFORE BUYING PETS FOR CHILDREN.
This is the main reason I stopped breeding because more than 50% of pets sold were coming back to me because the family didn’t want them anymore after a few months. 😳
