HOW TO COOL YOUR DOG DOWN IN HOT WEATHER!! ☀️
There are many mistakes people can make when it comes to cooking there pets down, cold water when a dog is panting and pouring it on their back❌
This is not ideal for 2 reasons
1) a dog releases heat through bottom area (chest etc) and breath and do sweat a little through their paws 🐾 so putting cold water onto a animals back can not only send them into shock but also whilst the sun is directly on it can become almost like a frying pan, baking away at the water making it very hot and potentially making the animal even hotter then it already was!
Use COOL water NOT COLD as you don’t want to create such a change of temperature; cool water, put some on your hand and back the dog underneath the chest area to help cool down. A cooling mat/cooling vests can also be a bifocal way or cooling your pet down/ keeping them cool. If you are near a source of water (shallow water or have a dog paddling pool) let them put there feet in or even lay in the water
Before even taking your dog out ensure the temperate of the ground by placing your hand or foot on the ground for 10 seconds + IF THE GROUND IS TOO HOT FOR YOU ITS TOO HOT FOR THEM! DOGS CAN OVERHEAT THROUGH THEIR PAWS 🐾 🌡️
If you see an animal excessively panting DO NOT give water right away as it can potentially cause bloat as they will drink excessively which can cause them to get air in their stomach and get into their gut which you DO NOT want. Instead wait for the animals breathing to subside (calm down) before giving any drinking water
Some things you can do to help keep your pet cool
1) DO NOT take your dog/pets out in hot temperatures especially brachycephalic breeds to prevent sun stroke , brachycephalic breeds, flat faced breeds, older dogs and puppies will suffer alot worse from sun stroke
2) putting ice cubes in water this helps to keep your dogs water cold throughout the day however do not leave your dog unattended with ice cubes in their water (take the water away after a walk until your dog has cooled down then place back down)
You can also buy a cooling dish in which you can place in the freezer overnight and fill up the next day ensuring your pet has cold fresh drinking water
3) cooling products
cooling mats, cooling vets, cooling toys etc can all be beneficial in playing a part to keep your pets cool especially when they’re used in the right way most of these products will have instructions of how to use of packaging but if you would like more information on this feel free to pop me a message 💬
4) ALWAYS make sure your dog/pet has fresh drinking water at all times wether this means multiple bowls of water placed around you area. You can also give MOST animals fruit and vegetables with a high water content such as watermelon 🍉 and cucumber 🥒 to help keep them hydrated (this is also suitable for rodents/ rabbits, turtles along with dogs or cats) always check before feeding your dogs new foods
5) Ensure your pet always has a shaded area or can go indoors, even in the shade of hot weather animals can get sunstroke. Give your turtles & snake a cool bath/ bowl to be in to help cool down too (DO NOT BATH RABBITS OR RODENTS!!)
Finally but most importantly
MISSING A WALK WILL NOT KILL YOUR DOG BUT WALKING IN THE HEAT WILL!!
MAKE THE RIGHT CHOICE AND KEEP YOUR ANIMALS SAFE!!
walk early morning before temperatures rise or later evening when the temperatures have dropped
