J. Riley Ecology

J. Riley Ecology Sheffield-based ecologist specialising in botanical training and habitat surveys. Would you like to learn more about the natural world?

Have you ever taken the dog for a walk in the woods and wondered what the trees you're walking past are called, or wished you could identify the birds singing in the treetops? I offer guided nature walks for small groups, one day workshops and seasonal short courses on a variety of topics, including (but not limited to) trees and woodlands, birds, plants and fungi. I specialise in introducing adul

t beginners to the wonderful world of wildlife in an interesting and accessible way, but can also teach more structured, advanced level courses. If you are looking for a local walk leader for an ecology event, are thinking about running a series of adult education sessions about the natural world, or want to book individual/small group tuition on a particular topic, get in touch and I'll see what I can do to help! I am also available for carrying out habitat surveys including PEAs using UKHab or Phase 1, BNG work, botanical and bird surveys - see my website for more details.

The plum family is having an amazing year! While carrying out a habitat survey I found and snacked on these little red ones, and noted the location of the sloes for later!

I've been surveying an ancient woodland, and found a huge area of remote sedge (an ancient woodland indicator species) with lots of opposite-leaved golden saxifrage hiding underneath (another AWI).

Believe it or not, this is one of the fun parts of habitat surveys - checking IDs of various mysterious/half-dead/difficult species 😁

It was a privilege! There are some great shots here (and at least one dodgy one!).

On 26 June we are delighted to welcome ecologist Julie Riley to Haddon Medieval Park to lead a Wildflower Wander through our peaceful meadows. This is a perfect opportunity to go behind the scenes into the private parkland that surrounds Haddon Hall and discover more about the importance of the native wildflowers of the UK. For 2-3 hours, walking at a gentle pace, under Julie’s expert guidance you will learn how to tell your campion from your cranesbill, your knapweed from your hawkweed.

Your ticket for this event entitles you to half-price admission to Haddon Hall on the same day, as well as complimentary tea/coffee in our award-winning restaurant after the walk.

Places are strictly limited. For more information and to book, please visit: https://www.haddonhall.co.uk/events/event/wildflower-wander-in-haddon-medieval-park/?t=park

I've never run a moth trap before, but I had the opportunity over the weekend for an event in Killamarsh. I'm amazed at how intricate moths are - aren't they gorgeous 😍
