We are an independent vet service, providing compassionate at-home euthanasia & cremations across Sheffield, Barnsley, Rotherham, Chesterfield, Wakefield and Doncaster. My name is Rob and I'm a vet with over 20 years experience caring for small animals. I set up Pets at Rest in 2018 to support families when the time comes to say goodbye to their companion. I keep pets' final moments relaxed and loving, ensuring the final farewell provides comfort for owners.

For anyone who has ever shared their life with a pet…

19/06/2026

It’s been one of those weeks that reminds us why the animals we welcome into our lives are so extraordinary. 🐾
In our work, we spend our days helping families say farewell to beloved companions. There are tears and heartbreak every day. Yet alongside that sadness comes the privilege of hearing the stories behind the animals we are caring for. This week alone, we’ve met pets who helped their owners through bereavement, divorce, job losses, depression and illness.

We’ve heard about dogs who gave people a reason to get up each morning when life felt overwhelming, cats who brought comfort through loneliness and loss, and companions whose quiet presence provided stability when everything else seemed uncertain. We’ve even heard from one family member this week whose pet helped to save their owner’s life.

These conversations never lose their impact.

They remind us that the animals who share our homes are so much more than pets. They are family members, trusted companions and a source of comfort, routine and unconditional love through some of life’s most difficult moments.

To everyone who has shared a story, offered a kind word, welcomed us into their home, or entrusted us with the care of a much-loved companion, thank you.

The privilege of hearing about these remarkable animals and the difference they have made to the lives of those who loved them is something that stays with us long after we leave, and they are a constant reminder of just how much our animals give us throughout their lives, right to the very end. 🤍

🤍 Today is World Pet Memorial Day🤍

A time to gently remember the animals who shared our lives and left paw prints on our hearts.
🐾

They may not be by our side anymore, but they are never truly gone. They are the happy memories, the silent companions in our quiet moments, and the warmth in our thoughts. They taught us unconditional love, and that bond remains unbroken.

We wanted to spread a bit of mid-week joy by sharing a cute photo sent to us this week.

🌞🐾 As the heatwave continues, there is no shortage of excellent advice on how to keep our pets cool. However, we less frequently discuss why our senior companions—find the summer heat considerably more challenging than they did in their younger years.

It is worth bearing in mind that our older pets find the summer heat considerably more challenging than they did in their younger years. Age brings natural physical changes that make managing hot weather a significant strain on their systems:

Less efficient temperature regulation: An older pet's internal thermostat doesn't function as effectively. They absorb heat much more quickly and find it far more difficult to cool back down.

The physical toll of staying cool: Dogs and cats rely on panting to regulate their temperature rather than sweating. For a senior pet—particularly one managing age-related heart or respiratory changes—the constant effort of panting is quite tiring.

Increased joint discomfort: High temperatures and humidity can exacerbate the inflammation associated with arthritis, making it uncomfortable for them to move away from warm spots to find a cooler space.

Even if they tolerated warmer weather in their younger days, you may notice an older pet struggles more to enjoy the season like they used to.

During these warmer spells, our older companions simply need a quiet, gentle routine. Ensuring they have a cool space to rest undisturbed is the greatest comfort we can provide for them.

There is often a lot of anxiety around how end-of-life care actually looks and feels for a beloved pet. 🐾 With that in mind, I’ve put together a few messages from families who have recently said goodbye to their companions at home. I’m sharing them today in the hope that their words might take away some of the fear or uncertainty for anyone facing a similar decision in the coming weeks.

Our sincere thanks go out to each family for such kind words. 🤍
