Meet Biscuit 🐾A brave little fighter!

Biscuit is a very special rescue puppy who’s captured everyone’s hearts at our South Ockendon practice. 💛

He was born with his umbilical cord wrapped around his legs, leaving him with hind limb injuries and in need of urgent treatment and round-the-clock care. Thankfully, our lead vet and branch partner, George 🩺, stepped in to give him the best possible start and took him in for himself! He took him home and, with the help of our nursing team, hand-reared him back to health.

Biscuit is now doing brilliantly, growing stronger every day, and is a much-loved member of the South Ockendon team. 🐶✨

This Mental Health Awareness Day, we’re reminded that the unconditional love of pets can play a big part in supporting our wellbeing. Whether it’s a wagging tail after a long day, a purr that brings comfort, or simply getting out for a walk together, our companions remind us to slow down and take care of ourselves.

At Medivet, we’re proud to care not just for pets, but also for the people who love them. Supporting each other; colleagues, clients and communities is at the heart of what we do.

Let’s celebrate the bond between people and pets, and the role it plays in better mental health.

💬 How does your pet help you look after your wellbeing? Share your story in the comments.

🚧 Exciting News & A Little Heads Up! 🚧

You may notice some changes happening around the practice soon – we’re having building work carried out to create an additional consult room and to give our reception area a fresh new layout.

This is to help us welcome our two new vets, Steph and Alexane, (some of you may have already met them!) and to make your visits even smoother in the future. 👩‍⚕️

Most of the work will be carried out overnight and at weekends, so there should be minimal disruption during your appointments. However, we do apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused and thank you for your patience while we improve the practice for you and your pets. 🐾💙

We can’t wait to show you the new space once it’s finished!

Say hi to this prickly little guy! This brave little hedgehog was brought into our Medivet Beeston practice after being injured by a strimmer and needed an amputation.

Garden wildlife often need a helping hand and small changes, like checking long grass before strimming, can make a huge difference. 🌱✨

We would like to introduce this very brave boy, Arthur. 🐈

Arthur came into out South Ockendon practice recently for a tail amputation. There are many reasons a cat may need an amputation and in this case it was because Arthur was found as a stray and had a severe infection in his tale. The team made the decision to amputate so Arthur could live a happy and healthy life.

Cześć! 🇵🇱🐾

Our fluffy friend Dudu came in today to get his Animal Health Certificate ready for an exciting trip to Poland with his family! 🧳🐶✈️

Dudu is no stranger to us – he always insists on popping out the back to say a big hello to Lottie and Bailey, our practice’s emotional support dogs (and best pals to Vet Emma and Deputy Head Nurse Laura-May 🐾). It’s always such a joy when he visits! 💕

We know once he arrives in Poland, he’ll be ready to tuck into some tasty treats… maybe a nibble of pierogi, a lick of sernik, or even trying to sneak a bit of kiełbasa if his family isn’t watching! 🥟🍰🌭

We love seeing Dudu and his wonderful Polish family – safe travels and miłej podróży (have a great trip)! 🌍🐾🇵🇱

🌾🐾 Grass Seeds & Your Dog – What You Need to Know! 🐾🌾

It’s that time of year when grass seeds are everywhere – and while they may look harmless, they can cause serious problems for our pets.

👉 These tiny seeds can easily lodge in your dog’s paws, ears, eyes, nose, or coat, and because of their shape, they tend to travel deeper rather than fall out. Left untreated, they can lead to painful infections, abscesses, and even require surgical removal.

⚠️ Signs to watch out for:
• Sudden licking or chewing at paws
• Head shaking or scratching at ears
• Redness, swelling, or discharge from eyes/nose
• Visible swelling or small wounds

💡 Top tips to protect your dog:
✔️ Avoid long grassy areas during peak seed season
✔️ Brush your dog thoroughly after walks, especially between toes and under the ears
✔️ Check paws, ears, and coat daily for stray seeds
✔️ Seek veterinary advice quickly if you notice any of the above symptoms

🐶 A quick check after every walk could save your pet from a lot of pain. If you’re ever concerned, don’t wait—give us a call and we’ll be happy to help.

Stay safe and enjoy those summer walks! 🌞🐕

This month’s Braveheart Award goes to the beautiful Xena! 🥇

Xena came in to us at the beginning of July as she was experiencing a prolonged season, excessive thirst and a decreased appetite. An ultrasound carried out by our vet Milly revealed Xena’s uterus was filled with fluid. 🩻

This raised concerns of a possible Pyometra, which is an infection of the uterus that can be life-threatening if not treated promptly. The treatment for a Pyometra is to perform a spay, which involves surgical removal of the uterus and ovaries. 👩‍⚕️

Xena was quickly started on intravenous fluids and prepared for surgery. 💧

Upon opening her abdomen, our suspicions were confirmed. We found a moderately to severely enlarged uterus filled with pus, indicating a significant Pyometra that required immediate attention, therefore, our vet Nicola surgically removed Xena’s uterus. 💉

Upon Xena’s recovery from her surgery, she was not willing to eat which some patients experience after an anaesthetic. Therefore, our nurses fed Xena through a syringe to ensure she was receiving nutrients to aid her recovery. ❤️‍🩹

Xena was discharged with pain relief and came back in the next day for a post-op check. Xena was not out of the woods yet due to still having a decreased appetite, thirst and diarrhoea, but remained the bright and happy girl we love to see. 🐶

Xena is now fully recovered thanks to the attentive care from her owners and thorough post-operative monitoring. Well done Xena! 👏🏻

🚨 A little reminder from your vet team 🚨

We’re seeing a big increase in people not turning up for their appointments without letting us know.

We understand that life happens — plans change, emergencies pop up — but when an appointment slot is left empty, it means another sick pet misses the chance to be seen. 🐾💔

Right now, we’re short on vets and working hard to fit in every poorly animal we can. Every single appointment is valuable.

If you can’t make it, please call us as soon as possible so we can offer the slot to another pet in need. 📞

Thank you 🙏

This month’s Braveheart Award goes to the admirable Alfie! 🥇

Alfie was seen as an emergency at our out of hours hospital as his owners were very concerned due to him choking and struggling to breathe. Following an examination by the night vet, a mass was discovered in Alfie’s abdomen 😢

Alfie was sent home with pain relief and his owners faced a very big decision; surgery to remove the mass, which involved a splenectomy (removal of the entire spleen)💉

Alfie was admitted the following week for tests to make sure the mass on his spleen had not spread elsewhere. Alfie was given a sedation and placed on oxygen. His x-rays revealed there were no obvious masses on his chest, therefore Milly updated Alfie’s owners who gave permission for his surgery to go ahead. 🩸

Following an hour long surgery, Alfie’s spleen was successfully removed, revealing a mass the size of a tennis ball! 🎾

Once awake from his surgery and stable enough to travel, Alfie was transferred to our out of hours for hospitalisation to ensure he made a full recovery from his operation. 🏥

During the night, Alfie began to drink by himself and was able to walk and urinate on his own. Following a well deserved sleep after his eventful day, Alfie was discharged the next day. 🐶

Alfie has returned to us for several post-op checks and despite the stress they cause him, they demonstrate his remarkable recovery from his surgery. Well done for your bravery Alfie – we are all so proud of you! 👏🏻
