NEUTRALITY - one of the biggest buzzwords in the dog training-verse, is it actually what we want?
Do we want our dogs neutral to everything? It’s the most unnatural thing for animals and that certainly includes humans! I think if we came across a completely neutral human we’d find them quite dull, because joy, happiness, excitement are all emotions that you wouldn’t classically call neutral. If you look at the world of dog sports which alot of owners look up to (think agility, fly ball etc) most of those dogs at the beginning are anything but neutral 😂 but the difference is the owner or handler are able to communicate with the dog during heightened emotions and this is kind of what I think the aim should be - clarity, commuincation and bond ❤️
So let’s shift the focus, let’s stop expecting neutrality and start thinking more about how we communicate, because the last thing we want is to neutralise your dogs personality, that’s what makes them fun! ✨
