How does hydrotherapy help dogs?

Water provides buoyancy, resistance, and hydrostatic pressure, allowing dogs to exercise with reduced impact on their joints while building strength, improving cardiovascular fitness, increasing range of motion, and enhancing movement quality.

What conditions can hydrotherapy help with?

Hydrotherapy may benefit dogs with:

• Arthritis
• Hip or elbow dysplasia
• Cruciate ligament injuries
• Post-operative recovery
• Neurological disorders
• Muscle weakness
• Obesity
• Reduced mobility due to age

Hydrotherapy can also be used for fitness and conditioning in sporting and working dogs.

☀️ Hot weather doesn’t mean your dog has to miss out on exercise

When temperatures rise, long walks and hot pavements can increase the risk of overheating and heatstroke.

Swimming can offer a safer way to keep dogs active during high temperatures — helping them stay cool while still burning energy, building fitness, and exercising the whole body.

📩 Message us to book your dog’s fun swim session for only £35.

“But my dog has never swam before…”

One of the most common things we hear at Peak Canine Performance is:

💭 “I’m worried because my dog can’t swim.”
💭 “They’ve never been in water before.”
💭 “They’re not a confident swimmer.”

Please don’t worry 💙

Dogs do not need to be confident swimmers to benefit from hydrotherapy. In fact, many dogs who come to us are completely new to the water! Every session is tailored to your dog as an individual, and we work at their pace to help them feel safe, comfortable, and supported throughout.

Some dogs jump straight in confidently, while others need a little more time and reassurance — and that’s completely okay.

At Peak Canine Performance, sessions are designed to build confidence gradually in a calm, positive environment. We use plenty of encouragement, support, and patience to help dogs learn that the water is a safe and enjoyable place to be.

It’s incredibly rewarding to watch nervous or unsure dogs grow in confidence over time and begin to truly enjoy their sessions 🩵

So if you’ve been putting off hydrotherapy because your dog “isn’t a swimmer,” please know that they don’t need to be. We’re here to support both you and your dog every step of the way 🐾

📩 Feel free to message us if you’d like to chat about whether hydrotherapy could help your dog.

Swimming doesn’t just work the big muscles — it also activates the smaller stabilising muscles that help support the joints, posture, balance, and overall movement 🐾 🌊

These muscles are incredibly important because they help control how the body moves and absorbs force during everyday activities like running, jumping, turning, and even simply walking. When stabilising muscles are weak, the larger muscles often have to compensate, which can place more strain on joints and movement patterns over time.

In the water, dogs are constantly making tiny adjustments to stay balanced and move against the resistance of the water. This naturally encourages the stabilising muscles around the shoulders, spine, core, and hips to switch on and work together.

Because the body is supported by buoyancy, dogs can strengthen these muscles in a low-impact environment with far less stress on the joints compared to many land-based exercises.

Research into canine hydrotherapy has shown that water exercise can increase muscle activation, improve coordination, and increase joint range of motion through the resistance and support properties of water — all of which can help improve overall movement quality and body awareness.

It really is an investment into your dogs future! Get in touch today to find out more 📲

Swimming is a fantastic low-impact exercise for dogs, providing a full-body workout while minimising stress on the joints.

The buoyancy of water supports movement, making swimming a great way to build fitness, strength, and stamina in a safe and controlled way. Despite being gentle on the body, swimming is still a highly effective form of cardiovascular exercise and can tire dogs surprisingly quickly!

It’s often said that “1 minute in the pool equals 1 mile on land” — and while every dog works at different intensities, it certainly highlights how physically demanding swimming can be.

We offer PEMF therapy alongside our hydrotherapy sessions and within our physiotherapy treatments as standard 👏🏻🐾

We offer PEMF therapy alongside our hydrotherapy sessions and within our physiotherapy treatments as standard 👏🏻🐾

A new peer-reviewed veterinary study found dogs🐶 with arthritis receiving PEMF⚡ (a non-invasive electromagnetic therapy) improved faster in pain, limping, muscle strength, and mobility compared to standard NSAID💊 pain meds. PEMF dogs also gained about 15% more muscle mass during the study, with no reported side effects.

One challenge? PEMF can still be difficult to access locally for many pet parents. For families who can’t access PEMF therapy, or are looking for a long-term daily option, research suggests ingredients like UC-II® collagen, creatine, and eggshell membrane may provide powerful support for joint comfort, mobility, and muscle health.

That’s exactly why created MOBILITY MATRIX™ — a comprehensive formula designed to support not just joints, but muscles, cartilage, connective tissue, recovery, and long-term mobility.

✔️ UC-II® collagen helps regulate joint inflammation
✔️ Glucosamine sulfate supports cartilage repair
✔️ MSM helps reduce oxidative stress
✔️ Eggshell membrane provides natural collagen compounds
✔️ Hyaluronic acid supports joint lubrication
✔️ Creatine helps maintain muscle strength and stability

Whether your pet is slowing down, recovering from injury, or you simply want to stay ahead of decline, early proactive support can make a huge difference.

Comment “MATRIX” and we’ll send the link.

This may be controversial, but... not every dog suits every hydrotherapy centre.

Just because a facility offers the service you’re looking for, it doesn’t mean it’s the right environment for your specific dog. Successful rehab is built on a foundation of trust, and if that “click” between the therapist and the dog or even the therapist and yourself isn’t there, the treatment simply won’t be as successful as it could be.

Why the “Click” is Everything
Think of it from your dog’s perspective. If they don’t feel comfortable or understood by the person they are working with, they can’t truly relax. A dog that is nervous or unsure will often “tense up” their body. When they are bracing like that, they aren’t using their muscles properly or moving freely, which means they aren’t getting the full benefit of the session.

It’s Okay to Look Elsewhere
As an owner, you are your dog’s best advocate. It is absolutely fine to realize that a certain environment or personality isn’t working for your dog.

Personality Matching: Some dogs need a firm, high-energy motivator; others need a quiet, patient therapist who will sit on the floor with them for ten minutes before the session even starts.

Environmental Needs: Some dogs thrive in a busy, active centre, while others need a calm, one-on-one space to feel safe.

The Goal is Progress
If you don’t feel your dog and the therapist are clicking, it doesn’t mean the therapist is “bad” or your dog is “difficult”—it just means the fit isn’t right. You should never feel guilty for seeking out the team that makes your dog feel the most confident.

When the relationship is right, the progress follows naturally.

If you want to phone us for a chat or come for a free acclimatisation session to meet the team and view the facilities, please get in touch 📲
