Over the weekend, I made the very difficult, but absolutely right, decision to let Pud gallop over the Rainbow Bridge. 🌈
Pudding has been a huge part of my life for over 10 years.
Pud has always been a firm favourite amongst my team. He had a huge personality, and you could never let that angelic face lull you into a false sense of security! He certainly put me on my backside a few times over the years. He was the biggest foodie, full of character, and truly one of the loveliest boys you could ever wish to meet.
Together we've travelled all over to schools, racecourses, farm parks, kids' clubs and birthday parties. As long as there was grass to eat or snacks to find, Pud was a very happy boy.
Over the years, I've had to say goodbye to several ponies, and strangely this time feels different. Of course I'm sad, and he will be deeply missed, but I also have a real sense of peace knowing it was the right time. His body has been letting him down over the last couple of years, thanks to the support of some fantastic vets, Equine dentists and nutritionalists we were able to keep him comfortable, happy and enjoying life.
Most importantly, he got to enjoy a wonderful six-year retirement doing exactly what he loved, being a lawnmower in the garden.
The herd dynamics have already changed, and there will definitely be a Pud-shaped hole amongst us all. Olive the foal loved her 'uncle Pud' and despite him being the boss of the herd, he put up with her shenanigans and even allowed her to eat from his feed bucket!
Letting them go before they suffer is one of the greatest acts of kindness we can give them.
