I like to play a game with myself when I'm out and about.
It's called **"What tree is that?"** and it's pretty self-explanatory 🤣
The more you know what you're looking at, the more you appreciate it.
Today, whilst moving the internal fence for the next grazing rotation, I found myself playing a different game:
**" What grass is that?"**
I'm still learning when it comes to pasture species. I can tell my Timothy from my Ryegrass, but I'm not quite so confident when it comes to Yorkshire Fog, Moor Grass and some of the others.
So I brought a few samples up for my own education. Partly because I wanted to identify them, but also because I wanted to better understand what my horses are actually grazing.
A healthy pasture is about far more than just "grass". Different species bring different nutritional profiles, rooting structures, growing habits and seasonal growth patterns. Add in some of the herbs and suddenly there's a lot more diversity under your horse's feet than many people realise.
Every time I learn to identify another species, I feel like I understand my fields just that little bit better.
👀 What grasses, herbs or plants can you spot in this collection?
