Let's talk senior dogs for a second. Our very distinguished older canines are just so special, but they have some needs as time goes on. From canine dementia/Alzheimer's, needing for rest, more patience, careful handling and respect for any arthritis or painful bits and to stay alert to their needs and also to be able to spot of something is wrong.
I just attended a seminar on geriatric grooming and while I learned a few things, it made me love how we do things here. We only groom 3 to 5 dogs per day in general. We don't want to be rushed, we love working at the dog's pace, and we are perfect for seniors. We have 2 people available for our elderly babies to hold, so we don't use straps much. I have groomed enough seniors to be able to do almost the whole groom with them lying down. We are happy for them to hang out so they can have as many breaks as they need and we will always do right by the dog. Sometimes it becomes just doing what's necessary to keep the dog happy and comfortable, or no longer being as bothered about the length of coat or it being perfectly even. Sometimes it is grooming over several sessions. We also tend to do complete checks over the dogs, including teeth so we can relay any information back to you so you can hopefully keep them healthy and happy for longer.
I have found older dogs can get confused or anxious and need lots of reassurance and consideration for their good and bad days. Just like us, they have sore days and better days and they have less patience than the younger dogs(again just like us😅)
With over 50 % of dog owners having senior dogs, which is between 7 and 10 years of age depending on breed, size etc, it's so important for us to learn about them and be sure to give those seniors some extra attention because getting old is hard.
Do you have a senior pet?
Post a photo of your distinguished pet, and also give them a cuddle because they are just so amazing
