Earlier this evening I received heartbreaking news that one of my doggy clients died today. I am totally bereft that I will never see her again.

I send much sympathy and love to her boss. She was a wonderful dog.

During the past three years my little business has gone from strength to strength. And that is all down to my wonderful human clients, past and present, who have put their trust in me to take the very best care of their pets whether that is by walking them or looking after them when the bosses are away. I absolutely love being around your pets.

Last week was a busy week with all the usual dog walks plus dog and cat sits. It took a bit of intense time management but it all worked put in the end.

Good advice...

Spring really arrived yesterday didn’t it? And then vanished again this morning. With the weather starting to warm up, adders will start to come out to warm up in the sun. They are lethargic and slow to move away until they’re fully warmed up, which means they may be more likely to bite instead.

Adders don’t generally bite unless they’re frightened, but they do sit out in the sun to bask and dogs have a habit of letting curiosity get the better of them!

If your dog gets bitten by an adder, this is what you need to do:

🐾 Try not to let your dog move. Snake venom in the tissues around the bite will hurt and swell, but venom in the blood stream can get to the organs. If you can, carry your dog. If that’s not possible, put them on the lead and encourage them to walk slowly. Movement can circulate the venom.
🐾 If it’s possible to do so safely, snap a quick picture of the snake. This is helpful to confirm it’s definitely an adder. Don’t go looking for the snake or get close though.
🐾 Call ahead to the vets to check they keep the anti-venom in. Not all vets do! Then get them there as quickly as you can.
🐾 It’s not generally recommended to apply anything to the bite, such as tourniquets or ice packs or compresses, and doing so just uses up precious time. Focus on getting to the vet instead.

During our Wednesday walk Sorrel & I found a miniature ring of standing stones, reminiscent of Stonehenge, on our adventures through the Haining woods.
