Post-surgical rehabilitation is a crucial part of recovery following cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) surgery 🐾

Surgery is only one step of the journey. Physiotherapy is what will help your dog regain confidence, mobility, and function again❗️

🐶Bobby here is benefiting from post-operative physiotherapy by:
✔️ Reducing pain and inflammation
✔️ Improving joint mobility and flexibility
✔️ Rebuilding muscle strength and stability
✔️ Encouraging correct weight bearing and gait patterns
✔️ Supporting a safer, smoother recovery

Hydrotherapy and physiotherapy work hand in hand to support your dog’s recovery, mobility, and long-term function 🐾💦

For dogs with cranial cruciate ligament injuries hydrotherapy provides a fantastic low-impact environment for movement and exercise, physiotherapy helps address the underlying factors that support progress both in and out of the water.

How does physiotherapy complement hydrotherapy?
🐾 Manual therapies can help reduce pain, muscle tension, and inflammation at the stifle joint.
🐾 Electrotherapies can support tissue healing at a cellular level in the ligament.
🐾 Land-based strength and conditioning exercises help improve muscle control and stifle joint support.
🐾Gait retraining exercises encourage more efficient and functional movement patterns to prevent compensations in the forelimbs or other areas.
🐾 Stability exercise is crucial for preventing instability at the patella.

Equine physiotherapy isn’t just for when something goes wrong!

Santos here will tell you that maintenance physiotherapy is an essential part of keeping him feeling and performing at his best ✨🐴

Regular physiotherapy can help with:
✔️ Early detection of potential issues before they develop into bigger problems
✔️ Injury prevention by addressing compensations and areas of strain
✔️ Performance optimisation so your horse can move comfortably and efficiently
✔️ Improving mobility and overall function
✔️ Relieving tension and soreness caused by training, competing, and daily work

Just like human athletes, horses benefit from ongoing maintenance to support their wellbeing, comfort, and longevity in work.

A proactive approach is always better than a reactive one 💙

Hope all my lovely clients (both two-legged and four-legged) are coping in this heat wave!☀️

As summer season is arriving here are some top tips to keep your equine friends cool😎

Hydration plays a much bigger role in your horse’s musculoskeletal health than many people realise 💦🐴

Why is hydration so important?
💧 Muscles function more efficiently when properly hydrated
💧 Helps reduce muscle tightness, fatigue, and cramping
💧 Supports joint health and lubrication
💧 Aids circulation and delivery of nutrients to tissues
💧 Assists recovery following exercise and training
💧 Helps maintain elasticity and function within soft tissues such as tendons and ligaments

1️⃣ Try giving your horses multiple water sources and adding treats like apples to encourage drinking. Use sloppy feeds and soaked hay to increase water intake.
2️⃣ Ensure fields have sufficient shade. Try turnout during the night when it’s cooler and keeping your equine friends in during the day when it’s too hot to provide plenty of shade.
3️⃣ Ride at the coolest points of day to prevent overheating!
4️⃣ Use salt/mineral licks or supplements in feeds to replace electrolytes as they sweat more.

Meet Benji 🐶 👋🏻

Benji came to me experiencing forelimb lameness meaning he was sore, uncomfortable, and struggling with his normal mobility 🐕

How can physiotherapy help your dog with lameness? ⬇️
-Full body assessment, not just the area of discomfort, so that we can identify possible causes, compensations, and weaknesses to address.
-Range of non-invasive treatments from manual therapies to electrotherapies to suit your dog as an individual and get them comfortable again!
-Addressing the root cause and not just masking the symptoms!

With physiotherapy intervention Benji is making a great recovery back to his usual self ❤️‍🩹

❗️Myth busting❗️🟰 “My horse only needs to see a physiotherapist if they are recovering from an injury.”❌

Although injury recovery and rehabilitation means physiotherapy is totally necessary for your horse or pony, ALL horses and ponies benefit hugely from physiotherapy and should ALL be checked over and treated at least yearly (more depending on working levels and medical history) ✅

Equine friends that benefit from physiotherapy 👇🏻
🐴Retired golden oldies to keep them moving comfortably.
🐴ANY ridden horse no matter working level. Horses undergo a lot of strain onto the musculoskeletal system to be ridden that needs addressing.
🐴Competition horses to optimise performance.
🐴Companion horses to ensure they are keeping well.
🐴Youngsters about to begin there ridden careers to ensure they get off to the best start!
🐴Driving ponies to address any strains, discomforts, and weaknesses.
