🐍 ADDER BITES IN DOGS 🐍
As temperatures rise from spring into summer, we begin to see more cases of adder bites across the UK — particularly in heathland, moorland, woodland edges, and sand dune areas.
Adders are the UK’s only venomous snake and, although not aggressive, may bite if startled or disturbed. To reduce the risk of bites, keep dogs on leads in known adder habitats and stick to footpaths where possible.
⚠️ Signs can develop rapidly and may include:
• Sudden swelling
• Pain or lameness
• Bruising or bleeding
• Vomiting or lethargy
• Collapse in severe cases
If you suspect an adder bite:
✔ Keep your dog calm and still
✔ Carry them if possible or walk slowly to the car
✔ Contact your vet immediately and call ahead
❌ Do not apply a tourniquet
❌ Do not apply ice packs
❌ Do not cut, squeeze, or suck the bite
Prompt veterinary treatment gives dogs the best chance of recovery. 🐾
