📍 June is National Microchipping Month 📍

Did you know it is now a legal requirement for both dogs AND cats to be microchipped in the UK? 🐾

A microchip gives your pet the best chance of being reunited with you if they ever go missing —but only if your contact details are kept up to date

Recently moved house? Changed your phone number? It’s always worth checking your details are correct.

If you’re unsure whether your pet’s chip details are up to date, our team are happy to help.

💚 Pet Appreciation Week 💚

The ones who greet us at the door no matter what kind of day we’ve had.
The ones who make us laugh, keep us company and somehow become part of the family 🐾

This week is all about appreciating the pets who make life that little bit better.

Drop a photo of your pet in the comments — we’d love to see them 👇🏼

✨ Meet the Team Mondays – Elicia ✨

Elicia joined the Seaham Vets team with an extensive background in customer service and HR, bringing with her a calm, caring and approachable nature that both clients and colleagues appreciate 💚

After completing a degree in Psychology, which included animal behaviour and communication modules, Elicia decided to follow her passion for animal care and is now working towards her ultimate goal of becoming a qualified veterinary nurse 🐾

She’s always looking out for the team too — especially with ice lolly runs on hot days 🍦☀️

We’re so happy to have Elicia as part of the Seaham Vets team and can’t wait to watch her continue to grow in her veterinary nursing journey.

Stray dog found in Seaham near the police station roundabout. The dog has a microchip and we have contacted the telephone number associated, but no answer unfortunately. Well cared for and is missing their home. Proof of ownership required upon collection. The dog also has a distinct marking on their back. 🐾🐶

If this is your dog please call us on 0191 5130913 between 8:30am - 6:30pm. Will be going to dog warden if not collected by owner.

🐾🌈Mental Health Awareness Week🌈🐾
This week you may have seen our wonderful team in their funky scrubs, instead of their usual Seaham Vets scrubs! This is to highlight Mental Health Awareness Week.

Veterinary environments can be emotional, stressful and overwhelming at times - not just for pet owners but for our team too.

The veterinary industry has one of the highest rates of mental health struggles amongst professionals, and whilst we strive to give the very best care to our patients and clients, we also think it’s important to look after each other too.

Please remember kindness always goes further than you realise 💕

☀️ Hot Weather Warning ☀️
Hot weather can become dangerous for pets much quicker than people realise 🐾

Even on “mild” warm days we can see:
🥵 Heatstroke
🐶 Burnt paws from hot pavements
💧 Dehydration
😮 Breathing difficulties

Some pets are far more at risk in warm weather, including:
⚠️ Flat-faced breeds (such as Bulldogs, Pugs and Persian cats) who struggle to cool themselves efficiently
⚠️ Puppies, kittens and elderly pets who can overheat much faster
⚠️ Overweight pets, as excess body fat makes it harder to regulate temperature
⚠️ Pets with heart or breathing conditions, who may struggle in the heat even on shorter walks

Remember:
✔ Walk dogs early morning or later evening
✔ Always provide fresh water and shaded areas
✔ NEVER leave pets in cars — temperatures rise dangerously fast
✔ Test pavements with the back of your hand before walks
✔ Keep exercise gentle during hotter days
✔ Watch for signs of overheating, especially in high-risk pets

Signs of heatstroke can include:
🚨 Excessive panting
🚨 Drooling
🚨 Lethargy or weakness
🚨 Vomiting or collapse
🚨 Distress or confusion

If your pet shows any signs of heatstroke or is struggling in the heat — contact us immediately 💚

🐾 Did you know that even a small amount of extra weight can place added strain on your pet’s joints?

Arthritis is a very common condition in both dogs and cats, particularly as they get older. Keeping your pet at a healthy weight can make a big difference to their comfort, mobility and overall quality of life.

Signs your pet may be struggling with arthritis include:
🐶 Slowing down on walks
🐱 Reluctance to jump or climb
🛏️ Stiffness after resting
😔 Changes in behaviour or mood
🚶 Difficulty getting up or using stairs

If your pet is showing any of these signs, our team is here to help. Whether your pet would benefit from a veterinary consultation or support from one of our veterinary nurses at a weight clinic, we can provide advice and preventative care tailored to their needs.

📞 Please contact Seaham Vets to book an appointment or speak to a member of the team.
