‼️ Watch out - ticks are about ‼️ this huge tick was removed from a dog last week at Pet Doctors

- Tick season is at its peak in Spring and Summer months
- Ticks are found in grassy and woodland areas, but can be hiding in parks and gardens
- Keep your pet up to date with parasite treatment
- Regularly check your pet over for ticks
- Ticks can transmit diseases such as Lyme Disease and Babesiosis, so it is important to remove them as soon as possible if you find one on your pet

Pet Doctors are always available for any advice on parasite treatment, or help if you find a tick on your pet 🐾

Hypertension (high blood pressure) is common in older cats and dogs.
In many pets, hypertension doesn’t have any symptoms until organ damage occurs, so routine blood pressure checks are recommended yearly for cats and dogs over 7 years old.

Did you know that mast cell tumours are one of the most commonly diagnosed skin tumours in dogs?
These tumours are often seen as round, hairless lumps that are prone to inflammation and ulceration, but can have many different appearances including soft lumps under the skin. They can grow anywhere on the body and can range from completely benign to highly aggressive. If caught early mast cell tumours are often very treatable, but rapid diagnosis is key.

Did you know that mammary tumours are more common in female dogs that haven't been spayed?
They often start as pea-sized lumps in the mammary (breast) tissue but can grow large and ulcerate. It is not uncommon for dogs to develop mammary tumours in multiple teats at the same time. There are many different types of mammary tumours, around 50% of which are aggressive, but more even the benign types can transform to become aggressive over time. It is recommended that any mammary masses are removed promptly for analysis, and this is usually curative.

Did you know that soft tissue sarcomas are a commonly diagnosed tumour in older dogs?
These tumours grow as soft lumps under the skin and can look and feel like fatty lumps. Soft tissue sarcomas can be much more aggressive however, and although they grow slowly, they can grow very large causing discomfort. They are most often found on the torso and legs. Early diagnosis gives the best chance for treatment, so always get new lumps checked by your vet.

The lovely Dill is our Braveheart of the month! ❤
Dill was presented with a lump on his abdomen. He is an older dog so the anaesthesia risks are higher than normal, and it was decided to monitor the lump. The lump grew bigger and became uncomfortable for Dill, so removal or 'debulking' was advised to make Dill as comfortable as possible.
Dill has amazed us all! He pulled through the surgery and is now more comfortable.

Dill's owner says "he is doing amazingly since his surgery and seems to have a renewed energy for life - he's bouncing around like a puppy! I can't thank the team at Pet Doctors enough - I hadn't dared hope for such a positive outcome. I feel like I've got my baby boy back"
Well done Dill ❤

Most pets will develop a lump on or under the skin at some point in their life, and some pets may develop several.
It is impossible to know for certain what a lump is just by looking at it. Many different types of tumour can look and feel identical, especially those that sit under the skin. However, making sure you feel your pet every few months will help you to understand what is normal, so you can spot any lumps and bumps early on.
When checking your pet take things slow, and stop if they seem unduly concerned at any point

6 Month Health Checks
Our Healthy Pet Club Six month health checks are with our qualified veterinary nurses. A check halfway through the year is great to monitor your pet’s health, and we can give advice about ways to keep them in great shape, and detect any early signs of disease.

The Nurse will ask you how your pet is getting on at home, and whether you have any concerns such as a change in eating or drinking habits, change to exercise routine, or unusual behaviours. They will greet your pet and assess their general behaviour and condition, often by watching them interact with their surroundings in the clinic. They will then look more closely at a few key areas:

🐱 - Weight
If your pet is under- or over-weight, the nurse or vet will advise you on a suitable feeding and exercise plan to keep your pet healthy.
🐶 - Mouth
Dental disease is the most common medical condition seen in our pets and affects animals as young as three years old. During the six month check your pet's mouth will be examined and any dental disease identified.
🐰 - Grooming
Although we are not groomers, a six month check is a great time to check for excess ear wax, matted hair in the coat, and overlong nails, all of which can be uncomfortable for our pets.
🐾 - Parasite control
Regular flea and worming treatment keep your pet and your family safe from harmful parasites and is included in your The Healthy Pet Club membership. At the six month check the nurse or vet will check your pet’s personal parasite treatment plan, making sure it includes the best products for them and the right doses.

What happens next?
Most of the time you can leave the six month check reassured that your pet is in good health. Sometimes recommendations for diet or exercise changes are made, and a follow-up visit may be advised in a month or two. Occasionally the six month health check may highlight a problem, in which case you will likely be referred to an appointment with a vet for further investigations.

⭐️ Winnie is our Superstar of the month! ⭐️
Back in December, Winnie had a mass in one of her mammary glands. Some samples were taken and based on the findings, removal of the mass was recommended.
Winnie was booked in to have a Regional Mastectomy to remove 3 mammary glands and their associated lymph nodes, as well as a ovariohysterectomy due to ongoing hormone release causing the problem!

This was a large operation, for which Winnie was absolutely amazing throughout ⭐️
Winnie has recovered really well and back to her normal self, all whilst looking beautiful in her Christmas buster collar! Well done Winnie!

Here is some advice from International Cat Care on how to make Christmas less stressful for cats
⛄️ Ensure you cat has several safe and comfortable places to hide
🎅🏻 Let guests give them treats and toys to help teach the cat positive associations with new people
🎄 Advise visitors to not approach your cat if it’s in its bed, only stroke the cat if it initiates contact
❄️ Position an additional litter tray for your cat in a quieter part of the house, ideally before visitors arrive so the change is gradual and your cat is comfortable with the new location
