Amazing news we have been able to buy some more equipment for our hedgehog's and its all thanks to our sponsors Krystal's Boutique they have been amazing and we did not expect the amount of support from them. on the other hand we have had no new calls from the public with anymore injured or hedgehog's in need of help but we are still helping 5 of last years juvenile's and they are coming on a treat one became stressed last month who is named bob but seems to be coping well now, So all we need now is spring to appear and the warmer weather and out 5 little ones will be released ready to live their lives and thank you to Krystal's boutique yet again.

Some good information on hear for everyone. It is that time of year when little ones need help before it gets to cold.

They can have hedgehog food, meaty cat or dog food or cat biscuits. They will also need a dish of water, especially if dry biscuits are offered. FEEDING STATIONS. Make a feeding station for the outside hedgehogs. Use either a plastic mushroom box or child’s toy box or similar and cut a 13cm x...

Autumn juvenile hedgehogs are ones that are old enough to be away from their mothers but too small to hibernate. The autumn juvenile season can start as early as September and is busy through until the end of November. However some will struggle on and the occasional one can be found from December through until April. This will vary slightly depending whether you live North or South.

A temporary home for a Autumn Juvenile will be a garage or similar building is an ideal temporary home, but don’t put hedgehogs on a metal grid or wire floor, they have sensitive feet!

Place the hedgehog in a large box with plenty of clean, fresh hay, crumpled newspapers or dry leaves. Take care to keep direct human contact to a minimum so that the hedgehog does not become unnaturally tame.

If the hedgehog is a regular visitor to your garden, is only seen at night, appears active and you are prepared to feed it every night then it can be left in the wild.

However if the hedgehog goes off its food, wobbles and staggers or starts coming out in the day or you notice it has green slimy poo especially if there is blood in it, then it needs extra help asap call a vet or take it in and im sure they will sort out the problem.

Hedgehogs are one of the few mammals that are true hibernators. During hibernation hedgehogs are not really asleep, instead they drop their body temperature to match their surroundings and enter a state of torpor. This allows them to save a lot of energy but slows down all other bodily functions making normal activity impossible.
Hedgehogs usually hibernate from October/November through to March/April. Research has shown that each individual is likely to move nesting sites at least once during this period and so can sometimes be seen out and about. During mild winters hedgehogs can remain active well into November and December

Young

Called Urchins. Typical litter is 4 to 6 babies, but can have around 10. Normally born early to late summer, although the late born babies will struggle to put on the weight needed for hibernation.

The male hedgehog takes no part in rearing baby hedgehogs. They are born after a 35 day pregnancy. The mother will have made a maternity nest as a nursery. This can be under a hedge, in a pile of leaves, in a black sack or very often under a shed or outbuilding.

The urchins are born with their first spines, which are white, covered by skin. As soon as they are born, the spines start to come through. Normally, they only have one litter a year. At birth the baby urchins' eyes and ears are closed. These open at about 14 days and their teeth start to come through after 21 days. After 8 weeks they are ready to become independent.

An urchin outside a nest is going to need rescuing. Its distress call is a high piping sound. It is no good putting stray urchins back into a nest or with other hedgehogs, they will get eaten. If you uncover a nest with urchins in it, do not disturb it, but cover it over again and leave it. The mother will usually return but not if human scent is on the babies
