A very Happy Birthday to our Junior Ambassador Elsie, who recently organised her own fundraising litter pick for our hospital. Elsie raised Β£316 from her efforts and turns 7 today. She hopes to encourage other young people to get involved in fundraising activities to help hedgehogs and the environment. Well done Elsie.

We would like to say a big THANK YOU to the receptionists and nurses at The VH Veterinary Hospital in Lincoln. https://www.facebook.com/vhvets.co.uk/ WE made an emergency dash with 2 very poorly hedgehogs yesterday and the professional and dedicated attitude when we arrived was wonderful. The hogs were seen immediately by three nurses and taken into triage while we waited in the nurses room (not in reception). Unfortunately neither of the hogs could be saved and were immediately PTS. One was almost DOA and nothing could be done and the other had a slit in the abdoman which had been there for some time and the infection had spread. The nurses were visibly concerned when they related the news but as is the way more often that not hedgehogs have a way of suffering in silence untill it is too late.. It was a very upsetting experience but we are truly grateful for the expertise of this independent vet who really did understand hedgehogs. We hope we don't have to visit too often but if we do we can be assured that no stone will be left unturned.

Our proudly independent veterinary practice has established itself amongst the local community and now provides care to thousands of pets every year.

🌟 AMAZING UPDATE FROM OUR SPONSORED LITTER PICKER! 🌟

We are absolutely thrilled to share that our wonderful young recently appointed Junior Ambassador has now completed 5 DAYS of sponsored litter picking for Andrews Hedgehog Hospital! πŸŽ‰

She's not stopping there, she's continuing her mission right through to the end of the month! πŸ’ͺ

The Results So Far: βœ… 3 full bin bags of rubbish removed from our local environment βœ… Over Β£200 raised for hedgehog rescue and rehabilitation βœ… Countless hazards removed that could have harmed wildlife

Her Most Interesting Find? A toothpaste tube! 🦷 Alongside loads of v**e boxes, cigarette butts, and plastic bottles, all items that pose serious risks to hedgehogs and other wildlife.

Why This Matters: Every piece of litter picked up is one less danger for our hedgehogs. Plastic, sharp objects, and toxic waste can cause injury, illness, or worse. By keeping our green spaces clean, she's directly helping protect one of Britain's most vulnerable native mammals. πŸ¦”πŸ’š

A Huge Thank You: To everyone who has donated so far, you're making a real difference! And to our incredible young volunteer, your dedication is truly inspiring. We're so proud of you! πŸ™Œ

Help Us Reach Even Further: She's still collecting until the end of the month! If you'd like to sponsor her or learn more about how you can support hedgehog conservation, please message us or visit our donation page.

Sometimes the most powerful change comes from the smallest hands. Meet Elsie, a six-year-old from Norfolk who is proving that age is just a number when it comes to making a difference.

During a recent family day out, Elsie noticed something that troubled her heart: rubbish scattered along the paths and hidden in the greenery. Rather than walk past it, she asked herself a simple but profound question about how she could save the birds and small animals living there.

That question sparked something extraordinary. Elsie decided to turn her concern into action by launching a five-day litter-picking challenge during her Easter holidays with a clear purpose: to raise money for hedgehogs, one of her favourite woodland creatures.

The results have been nothing short of remarkable. She has already raised over one hundred pounds for hedgehog conservation, and her enthusiasm has been so contagious that friends and family have joined in to help pick up litter.

Her initiative even reached her school, where she spoke in an assembly to share fascinating facts about hedgehogs with her classmates. She has also placed stickers around the local area to remind people to check the grass before mowing, a vital safety measure for these spiky creatures.

We have decided to honour Elsie's outstanding contribution by making her a Junior Ambassador and presenting her with a special certificate which recognises that this is just the beginning of what we hope will be a long journey of environmental stewardship.

Although Elsie is based in Norfolk, three hours away, and is only six years old, her impact is reaching far beyond her local community. We believe that if a child her age can mobilise friends, family, and an entire school, then there is no limit to what young people can achieve together. Our goal is to encourage other children locally to be influenced by Elsie's example, showing them that they do not need a grand plan to start making a difference. You simply need something you care about, a willingness to take action, and the courage to speak up.

If Elsie's story inspires you, there are many ways to follow her lead by talking about the issues with friends and family, or create simple awareness campaigns with posters and stickers. Even small fundraising amounts add up when many contribute, and recognizing the effort of young change makers in your community can go a long way.
Elsie reminds us that compassion does not wait for permission. She did not wait to be older, for someone else to act, or for the perfect moment. She saw a problem and decided to do something about it.

To Elsie, thank you for showing us all what is possible. Your dedication to hedgehogs, your commitment to keeping our green spaces clean, and your willingness to speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves is truly inspiring. To other young people reading this, you have the same power. What will you choose to protect?

If you would like to support Elsie's ongoing work or learn more about hedgehog conservation in your area, please reach out. Together, we can create a community where every child feels empowered to make a difference.

It's Spring Cleaning time at Andrews and our special thanks to Debra and Hillary for doing such a brilliant job on Wednesday. Their spraying, scrubbing and disinfecting of the empty cages was done with such good humour and the cages are now ready to accept new patients. (It is not the best job in the world!). Chris of course keeps Triage immaculate as usual and Ian on Thursday spent the time concreting and levelling the floor in the barn ready for the new double sink unit. Rebecca sorted out the newspapers whilst sitting sunbathing on the floor of the cabin and we started the home grown vegetable planting exercise. All this after cleaning and feeding the present patients. What a crew!!!
