⚠️GRAPHIC⚠️ A gentle but important reminder about dogs and wildlife

Yesterday, we had this duck brought into the surgery after it had been attacked by a dog.

Despite urgent veterinary care and surgery, it sadly didn’t survive.

Dog attacks on wildlife are something we see far too often, and in many cases, they are completely preventable.

Even the most well-behaved, friendly dogs still have natural instincts. A quick chase, a grab, or even just stress alone can cause severe injuries or death to wildlife.

Please keep dogs on leads when:
• Walking near lakes, ponds, or rivers
• In areas known for birds and small mammals
• During nesting and breeding seasons
• Anywhere wildlife may be present (which is more often than you think)

For a wild animal, a dog isn’t “just playing”, it’s a predator.

This duck went through surgery, fought hard, and still didn’t make it. Situations like this are heartbreaking, and they don’t need to happen.

A lead might feel like a small inconvenience, but for wildlife, it can be the difference between life and death.

Please be mindful. Please be responsible.
Let’s protect the wildlife we share these spaces with. 🐾🦆

This little guy was handed in to us at Vets for Pets Grimsby after being found with an injured wing, and has now been admitted to our rescue for some TLC 😁

He’s been a very good patient so far and is already showing signs of improvement. With the right care, rest, and rehabilitation, we’re hopeful he’ll be back where he belongs, soaring the skies again soon ☁️🦅

We’ll keep you updated on his recovery 🐦💪

Latest admission to the rescue is this stunning juvenile Gull. He was brought into us at Vets for Pets Grimsby after having been found grounded due to suspected window head trauma. He was quickly assessed by the team, xrays taken and treatment given. He is now at the rescue where we will continue to closely monitor him. Our fingers are crossed he makes a full recovery and be released back to the skies 🌅 🦅

🚨 Important Notice - AVIAN INFLUENZA 🚨

Given the latest update from the government on the outbreak of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) H5N1 in England, we’re making some temporary changes to our intake process to protect the wild birds we rescue and prevent the spread of disease.

📹 New requirement for admissions
Effective immediately, we ask that a short video of the bird you’re bringing in is submitted before we accept admission. This helps us assess whether:
- the bird is showing any signs of illness or distress
- we’re confident on-site biosecurity measures can be met
- we can safely care for the bird without risking other patients.

✅ What to include in your video/message
- A clear view of the bird
- Any noticeable symptoms: e.g., lethargy, discharge, abnormal feathers.
- The environment it’s been found in (garden, pond edge, woodland etc).
- Your contact details and how long you’ve had it.

🙏 We appreciate your cooperation
We know this is an extra step, but it helps us continue our rescue work safely and effectively. Thank you for helping ensure a safe environment for all the birds in our care.
If you have any questions or need help filming the clip, message us here and we’ll talk you through it.

🕊️ Update on the Collared Doves 🕊️

A while back, two young collared doves were brought into the rescue. They were weak, unsure, and needed a bit of help to get back on their feet. 💪

One made a quick recovery and has already been released. It’s awesome watching a bird take off strong and steady after a rough start. 🕊️

The second dove had a tougher time. He’d lost several of his flight feathers and wasn’t ready to fly just yet. After some time, good food, and care, his feathers have now almost fully grown back and he’s building up his strength again.

He’s flying well now and will soon be ready to return to the wild where he belongs. 🌅

Every release is a reminder of why we do this, giving wildlife a proper second chance.

🕊 Pigeon Progress Update! 🕊

This lovely pigeon was handed in to us at Vets for Pets Grimsby after being found with a small wound on his back and quite a bit of feather loss. After some rest, care, and plenty of good food, his wound has fully healed and his feathers are growing back beautifully! 💪

He’s well on the mend and will soon be ready to take to the skies again. 🌤

A massive thank you for the donation of cages today. Your support means more space and comfort for the animals in our care. 🤩

Bonfire Night can be a dangerous time for our wild friends, especially hedgehogs, mice, and birds looking for cosy places to shelter. Before lighting your bonfire, please take a few simple steps to help keep them safe:

🌿 Build on the Day – Hedgehogs love to hide in piles of logs and leaves. Only build your bonfire on the day you plan to light it, and keep materials off the ground until then.

🔦 Check Before You Light – Use a torch and a stick to gently check for any sleeping wildlife before lighting your bonfire. Listen for rustling or movement inside.

🔥 Light from One Side Only – This gives any hidden animals a chance to escape if they’ve snuck in.

🏡 Provide Safe Alternatives – Leave out food and water away from the noise. A quiet corner of your garden can be a safe retreat for frightened animals.

🎆 Keep Fireworks Wildlife-Friendly – Avoid loud fireworks where possible and stick to quieter, eco-friendly options if you can, or alternatively visit a local display. This will not only help our wildlife, but also domestic animals and even people!

Let’s make sure Bonfire Night stays fun for us and safe for the wildlife we share our gardens with 💚

🦔 Winter is coming — help our hedgehogs!

Hedgehogs need to fatten up before hibernation, however finding food can be a bit tricky this time of year. You can help by leaving out meaty cat or dog food (not fish-based), or some hedgehog specific food, as well as a shallow dish of water.

Skip the milk and bread, and keep a wild corner in your garden for shelter and insects. Every small act helps!
