βοΈ Heatwave Advice for Flat-Faced Dogs This Week βοΈ
Due to the very hot weather forecast this week, we are recommending that owners of flat-faced (short-nosed) dog breeds such as French Bulldogs, English Bulldogs, Pugs, Boston Terriers and similar breeds postpone routine appointments and elective procedures where possible, including vaccinations, health checks and neutering operations.
These breeds can struggle to regulate their body temperature and are at a significantly higher risk of heat-related illness during periods of extreme heat.
If your dog does need to attend an appointment:
πΎ Cool your car before travelling and ensure air conditioning is working effectively.
πΎ Travel during the coolest part of the day where possible.
πΎ Use cooling jackets, cooling mats or damp towels as appropriate.
πΎ Bring fresh water for the journey.
πΎ Avoid unnecessary exercise before travelling.
πΎ Never leave your dog unattended in a vehicle, even for a short time.
Recognising heatstroke:
Signs can include excessive panting, difficulty breathing, drooling, weakness, vomiting, collapse, or reduced responsiveness.
π¨ If you suspect heatstroke: "Wet them, then vet them." π¨
Immediately begin cooling your dog at home using cool (not ice-cold) water over their body, focusing on the belly, paws and legs, and use fans if available. Once cooling has started, contact us and bring your dog to the practice as soon as possible for assessment and treatment.
Early cooling saves lives.
If you are unsure whether your dog should attend a scheduled appointment, please contact the practice for advice.
Stay safe and keep your pets cool this week. πΆπ
